Challenge question for all you political reporters. Or social reporters looking to see some shocked and confused politicians.
IF YOU DIDN'T SHARE IT, THAT'S ON ME
I wrote last post about why this work doesn't turn up in the news. There's a reason I left out, and it's the one I've been slowest to face.
A lot of people read this and don't pass it on.
Some of that is the writing, and that part is entirely mine. If you've never heard the phrase nominated entity, or associated entity, or you're not sure what separates a gift from a receipt, then a post full of section numbers isn't information. It's a wall. And nobody shares something they couldn't defend if a mate pushed back on it in the comments. That isn't apathy. It's the perfectly sensible instinct not to look like you're out of your depth on something you only half understood.
So when a post doesn't travel, the honest reading is that I didn't make it clear enough.
Not that people didn't care.
The other part is harder to say without it sounding like a guilt trip, so let me be plain about what I'm not doing. I'm not asking anyone to prove anything by sharing this. I'm not suggesting that staying quiet makes you complicit. People have real reasons for keeping their names away from political posts. Employers. Contracts. Clients. A small town where everybody knows everybody. Those aren't excuses, they're circumstances, and I'd never tell someone their livelihood matters less than my post.
But I've stood for office. I know exactly what it costs to put your name on something and wait for what comes back. So I'm not asking anyone to do a thing I haven't done.
Here's what I'd say instead. You don't have to share a word of this to use it.
Ask your local member one question. Why does the Electoral Act require parties to declare the total they spent, and no section requires them to say who they paid it to? You don't need to have read the Act. You just need to ask, and then tell people what the answer was.
That's it. That's the whole ask. One question, from one person who isn't posting anything.
And if this still reads like a wall, tell me which part and I'll write it again properly. That's my job, not yours.
Cold Hard Facts. Corrected when wrong. No miss information.
What's your thoughts…?
