Earlier this week, Prime Minister Carney announced his plans to privatize Canada’s largest airports. So, I went to YVR to ask Canadians what they think (spoiler: they don’t share his enthusiasm).

Oyster fishing has been a way of life on Prince Edward Island for more than 150 years, but disease is threatening to wipe out the sector that has sustained communities here for generations. In an unstable world, we need to protect Canada's domestic industries. I spoke with fishers in Charlottetown to find out what's at stake and what the federal government can do to help.

On World Teachers' Day, New Democrats are proud to stand with the educators who show up every day to give students the support, opportunity and care they deserve. Teachers across Canada are overworked and undervalued, too often forced to battle austerity agendas that keep our classrooms underfunded and their labour taken for granted. Educators know the importance of public education, and they’re on the front lines of fighting for a system that allows everyone to thrive — teachers, students and families alike. To every teacher, thank you for the tireless work you do each and every day. Through it all, New Democrats have your back. ✊

I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast on and off for the past 20 years. It’s where our son was born and went to school, and where we’ve become embedded in a caring, close-knit community. This news is a huge relief for the 400 workers at Howe Sound Pulp, their families, and the local economy. Congrats to @UniforTheUnion Local 1119 and all involved in saving these good union jobs at the mill!

The environmental and climate consequences of building a new oil pipeline are extreme, including the threat to endangered Southern Resident orcas. Another summer of devastating wildfires that forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate from their homes should have been the wake up call this government needed to put the interests of Canadians ahead of the profits of the oil and gas industry. Running roughshod over environmental protections, Indigenous consultation and workers’ rights is not nation building. It’s building a pipeline to the courts.

The oil industry is unwilling to pay for this pipeline because even they know the world is moving away from fossil fuels. This project leaves Canadians bearing all the risks of a bad investment without any of the rewards. Projects that truly serve the national interest would lower costs, create good jobs, protect our environment and prepare us for the green economy of the future.

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest. This is just another gift to an oil industry already on track to make $100 billion in wartime profits this year alone. We pay, we take on the risk, and they reap the rewards.

Earlier today, as the community at Tsawwassen First Nation gathered to reflect and mourn, two people were killed and two others injured in a vehicle collision. On an already somber day, it is a terrible tragedy that the community has been pushed further into grief. I’m sending strength and love to the families of the victims and the entire community.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, people across Canada are gathering in remembrance and renewed determination to ensure ours is a country where every child matters. As the late Honourable Murray Sinclair reminded us, “there can be no reconciliation without truth.” But today, the bravely, painfully told truth of residential schools has become a primary target for hate movements, as we saw on the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc reserve. So it’s more important than ever for every one of us to uphold the truth, stand with residential school survivors, and continue to share their stories. And more: it’s past time for our governments to fulfill the long-unfinished 79 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. Just last week, survivors gathered on Parliament Hill to ask the government directly for protection and the resources needed to heal, including permanent funding for the Indian Residential School Resolution Health Program. We will continue to echo their calls and keep the pressure on the government to support MP Leah Gazan’s Bill C-245, to take action against residential school denialism. It will take all of us to build a better world. Survivors have done the painful, important work of sharing the truth and charting a path for our country to move towards reconciliation. Now, our governments must deliver.

Liberal MP Sean Casey was demoted by Mark Carney last week after voting in favour of Jenny Kwan’s Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act. When will the Liberals stop punishing MPs for doing their job—and finally act to close this loophole?

Last week, Avi Lewis and our NDP caucus joined Bank of Canada security workers on the picket line. These workers protect one of Canada's most important institutions, but for 97 days, they’ve been locked out and disrespected. The Bank even brought in replacement workers twice, breaking federal anti-scab legislation that our caucus won last Parliament. As the Liberals ramp up their attacks on the right to strike, we'll keep standing with workers to fight back, together.

It's outrageous that an American company is laying off hundreds of steelworkers, breaking their promise even after being offered financial support from the federal government to weather the tariffs. We need immediate federal action to protect workers who are bearing the brunt of this trade war. And it's time for a real conversation in this country about foreign takeovers of Canadian industry.

Rising residential school denialism and anti-Indigenous racism have created an environment where white supremacists feel emboldened to target and intimidate First Nations in their communities. It’s disgusting and completely unacceptable. I echo @AFN_Updates and Leah Gazan’s calls for a full investigation into the hateful demonstration on the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation, and a swift response to address this escalating threat to nations across the country.
The act of hate and violence shown by white nationalist residential school denialists demonstrating on the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation is abhorrent, dangerous and unacceptable. This demonstration is a part of the escalating and harrowing attacks from residential school denialists, seeking attention and monetization from the promotion of hate. I join the @AFN_Updates calls for a full investigation, and for governments to take urgent action to respond to residential school denialism with the urgency and seriousness needed to protect the safety and dignity of survivors. The House of Commons unanimously recognized the Indian Residential School System as a genocide in 2022. Governments and leaders must respond to these attacks as what they are - the violent denial of genocide that poses a grave threat to the safety of survivors, families, communities and our nations. Survivors have asked governments to protect their safety and their stories from residential school denialists, which is why I put forward Bill C-254 to add residential school denialism to the Criminal Code as an incitement of hate. This issue is non-partisan. That is why I have offered the Liberals my bill to take on as a government bill and criminalize residential school denialism once and for all. It is incumbent on the Liberal government to ensure the safety of survivors Survivors deserve more than our words of condemnation. We owe them real action and real protection. To Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation, my heart goes out to you after this terrifying attack. I am holding all survivors of residential schools, their families and communities in my heart. I stand by you and uplift you.
