Today the Axiom Foundation @AxiomFdn launches publicly. The law is society's source code, and it ships as prose. Every eligibility system, compliance tool, and government office that touches it first translates it into software — privately, expensively, and differently every time. Society runs on the law, but almost nobody can run the law. The Axiom Foundation exists to change that: a computable layer for the law itself. We publish open, machine-readable encodings — every value citing its statute, every clause carrying its effective date, every encoding checked against independent implementations before it ships. We start where the arithmetic is least forgiving: tax and benefit policy, the rules that decide what a family owes and what help it receives — the domain I've spent six years computing at PolicyEngine. The mandate doesn't stop there: statutes, regulations, and agency manuals, as code anyone can run, audit, or reform. The timing is no accident. AI can finally read statute and encode it at scale — and AI systems now answer these questions millions of times a day with no ground truth to stand on. The tool that makes the law encodable is the same tool that makes encoding it urgent. So we're building it in the open, where anyone can verify it. And @ThePolicyEngine isn't going anywhere: it becomes the Axiom Foundation's first and most demanding consumer, with major new releases coming this year. Its rules have been open from day one — what's new is the institution around them: cited, cross-verified, and stewarded as a public standard anyone can build on.
