BOWIE STATE GETS FIRST WIN FOR NEW HEAD MAN DAWSON ODUMS! ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Junior running back Maximus Jones carried 23 times for 148 yards and touchdowns of 2 and 29 yards and Bowie State had 25 first downs overall, went 1-for-1 on fourth down and possessed the ball for 30:15 in getting the first win for new head coach Dawson Odums, 34-23 over Elizabeth City State. Defensively, the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-1 CIAA) recorded five sacks for 44 yards, held ECSU (0-4, 0-2) to 228 total yards and 3.7 yards per play, and limited the Vikings to 4-of-14 on third down. JACKSON, MS – Nate Blount IV powered his way to 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries to lead undefeated Jackson State (4-0, 1-0 SWAC E) to a 35-17 victory over rival Southern (2-3, 0-1) before 38,973 fans on Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. • ALABAMA A&M POWERS PAST FLORIDA A&M! TALLAHASSEE, FL – Freshman Byron Perilliat ran for 223 yards on 16 carries (13.9 yards per carry) with fourth-quarter TD runs of 15 and 22 yards, QB Cornelius Brown IV (18-26-1, 198 yards) threw for three first-half scores and Alabama A&M amassed 523 yards of offense in running past Florida A&M, 40-21. Two of Brown’s scores went to Jaylan Bean (5 catches, 93 yards) covering 13 and 64 yards. FAMU (1-4, 0-1 E) got three TD passes from freshman QB Armond Parker and pulled with 23-21 in the third quarter before A&M (4-1, 1-0 E) scored the final 17 points.

SHAW CONVERTS 2-POINT OT CONVERSION TO DOWN LIVINGSTONE! DURHAM, NC – Shaw RB Fabian Duncan ran in for a 2-point conversion in overtime to give the Bears a 28-27 win over Livingstone. The teams finished regulation tied at 20 and Livingstone scored first in the extra period on a 1-yard run and led 27-20 after a successful PAT kick. Shaw QB Alexander Marsh (16-25-0, 256 yards) threw his second TD of the game in the Bears’ possession, connecting with Jeffrey McDonald Jr. from 13 yards out. Shaw head coach Lamar Manigo eschewed a tying PAT kick and instead went for the win. Duncan easily scored around the left side of the offensive line for the Bears' victory.

PRAIRIE VIEW PREVAILS OVER GRAMBLING BEFORE 42,000-PLUS IN STATE FAIR CLASSIC! DALLAS, TX – Grambling State scored first and last but Prairie View A&M scored three touchdowns in between to come away with a 21-14 win in the Cotton Bowl’s State Fair Classic SWAC West battle. The attendance was 42,942. PV QB Tevin Carter (18-22-0, 160 yards) threw second and fourth quarter TD passes around Jahbari Kuykendall’s 37-yard third quarter TD run for the Panthers (2-3, 2-0 SWAC W). Grambling (2-2, 0-1 W) scored first in the second quarter on a 50-yard pass and didn’t score again until there was 3:10 left in the final stanza. FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Virginia Union limited Fayetteville State to 93 total yards, 25 passing and 68 rushing, in shutting out the Broncos (2-3, 1-2 CIAA), 14-0 on their home field. • NC A&T KNOCKS OFF NO. 19 RHODE ISLAND FOR FIRST WIN! GREENSBORO, NC – North Carolina A&T built a 15-3 halftime lead and held on for its first win of the season, a stunning 22-18 win over nationally-ranked CAA favorite Rhode Island Saturday evening. The Aggies (1-4, 1-1 CAA) got three key field goals of 41, 31 and 21 yards from freshman placekicker Asher Holland, a 2-yard second-quarter touchdown run from QB Kevin White and forced four turnovers, one a fumble forced by Kamari Blankumsee that led to White’s TD run and a sack fumble caused by freshman Donavan Frederick that sophomore Tyrek Brown scooped up and returned it 69 yards for A&T’s only second-half score, giving A&T a 22-3 lead. Rhode Island (2-3, 1-2) scored twice, once late in the third quarter and one early in the fourth quarter to pull within 22-18 but the Aggies turned them away three times before the final buzzer. • JC SMITH SCORES IN FINAL MINUTE TO DOWN FAYETTEVILLE STATE! FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Johnson C. Smith scored on a Kamarro Edmonds 6-yard run with :49 seconds left to give the Golden Bulls a come-from-behind 20-14 win at Fayetteville State Saturday afternoon. The score came at the end of a 12-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 6 minutes and 15 seconds after FSU QB Jamir Dismukes has scored on a 20-yard run to put the Broncos (2-2, 1-1 CIAA) up 14-13 with 7:04 to play. Prior to the fourth-quarter fireworks, the defensive struggle saw the teams exchange second-quarter touchdowns and JCSU hit on a field goal with just over 2 minutes left to lead 10-7 at the break. JCSU RB Fabian Duncan had his fourth straight 100-yard game, rushing for 157 yards on 31 carries. JCSU wideout Brian Lane had six receptions for 108 yards. Edmonds (9 carries, 57 yards) had both JCSU TDs, going in from 5 yards out in the second period.

• TWO FOURTH-QUARTER SCORES PROPEL VIRGINIA STATE OVER ELIZABETH CITY STATE! ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Virginia State broke from a 14-14 tie after three quarters, scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat back a determined effort from home standing Elizabeth City State and come away with a 28-14 win. VSU QB Rahsaan Matthews Jr. (23-34-0, 262 yards) ran in from 10 yards out with just over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter and then hit Jaylen Pretlow with an 18-yard TD pass with 5:42 left to propel the Trojans (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) to the win. Matthews had opening the scoring hitting Kevin Gayles with 51-yard score late in the first quarter. FVSU (0-3, 0-1) then had back-to-back scores on two TD passes from Troy Smith, 16 yards to Terrance Holland and 3 yards to Joe Griffin to lead 14-7 at the break. Pretlow, from Wildcat formation, scored on 1-yard run late in the the third quarter to tie the score at 14.

• MISSED PAT KICKS ALLOW BCSP D2 NO. 1 BENEDICT TO ESCAPE WITH OVERTIME WIN AT FORT VALLEY STATE! FORT VALLEY, GA – BCSP Div. II No. 1 Benedict’s placekicker Logan Kawacki kicked thru an extra point in overtime after Fort Valley State placekicker Kyle Keese missed a PAT kick at the end of regulation that would have won the game and a PAT kick at the beginning of overtime allowing the Tigers to escape with a 34-33 win and remain unbeaten. Benedict (3-0, 1-0 SIAC) led 10-8 at the half and after surrendering the lead early in the third quarter went into the final stanza trailing 15-13. It went up 27-15 in the fourth quarter on two rushing TDs of 22 yards from A’chean Durant and 25 yards from Christopher Johnson, the last coming at the 7:45 mark. But FVSU (1-2, 0-2) scored with 4:53 left on a 12-yard run by QB Don Hudson and then scored again with :09 seconds left when Hudson hit Myles Smith for a 6-yard score. Those FVSU drives covered 75 and 78 yards and were keyed by big passes by Hudson of 51 and 61 yards. A two-point conversion failed after the first score and Keese missed that PAT kick to send the game into an extra period. FVSU got the ball first and scored on its second play on a 14-yard run by Rodrick Payne. Keese’s missed PAT kick left the door open for Benedict. The Tigers scored on a 25-yard pass from Jett Peddy to Reese Dobard. Kawacki, who had two field goals and four PAT kicks in regulation, then kicked thru the game winner. Peddy finished 19 of 30 for 198 yards but was picked off twice, both times by FVSU’s Daymon Polite. Durant rushed for 86 yards on 13 carries. Hudson ran for 94 yards and a score and threw (16-28-1) for 237 yards and one score. Payne had 99 rushing yards and 2 TDs.
