Yesterday, BPD hosted its annual Baltimore Police Community Chaplain All-Toll Meeting. During the meeting, Commissioner Worley thanked the chaplains for the invaluable role they play in supporting our officers, their families, and the citizens we serve. The Baltimore Police Community Chaplains provide an important source of guidance, compassion, and support to our department and the Baltimore community. We are grateful for their continued service, dedication, and commitment to those who serve and protect our city. Thank you to all our chaplains for the work you do each day. Information Sought Homicide Detectives are seeking information related to the murder of Demetrius Speaks, who was killed on September 16, 2026, in the 3400 block of Spelman Road. On September 22, 2026, Police Commissioner Richard Worley met with members of the Jewish Council for a meaningful conversation about his career, the Baltimore Police Department, and his vision for the agency. Commissioner Worley shared his journey through the ranks of the BPD, from his early days as an officer to his appointment as Commissioner. He also discussed the challenges facing the department, the accomplishments he is proud of, and the importance of continued training and professional development. The Commissioner spoke about his vision for the future of the BPD and the department’s ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with the communities we serve. We thank the members of the Jewish Council for taking the time to meet with Commissioner Worley and for their continued engagement and partnership with the Baltimore Police Department.

Aggravated Assault & Handgun Violation Arrest On September 19, 2026, at approximately 11:46 a.m., Northeast District police were called to the 6700 block of Belair Road for a report of an armed person. Once there, officers spoke with a 41-year-old female who informed investigators that two unidentified males in a silver Lexus threw a plastic soda bottle at her vehicle and then brandished two handguns. A description of the suspects and their vehicle was dispatched over the air, and on September 20, 2026, at approximately 6:33 p.m., detectives located the vehicle in the unit block of Maple Avenue. Officers initiated a vehicle stop, and following a brief investigation, officers arrested the three occupants and recovered two loaded handguns. Officers arrested two 19-year-old males and a 20-year-old male; all three occupants were transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where they were charged with numerous handgun violations.

Western District Attempted Murder Arrest   On Monday, September 21, 2026, at approximately 8:11 a.m., members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force arrested 42-year-old Walter Lee Powell.   Powell was wanted in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred on September 3, 2026, in the 1300 block of Laurens Street. At that time, a 30-year-old male was shot following a dispute.   Powell was transported to Central Booking, where he was charged with First-Degree Attempted Murder. __________________________________________________ Original Release   Western District Shooting Investigation   On September 3, 2026, at approximately 10:27 p.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of Laurens Street to investigate a ShotSpotter alert.   Upon arrival, officers located evidence of a shooting; however, no victim was found at the scene. On September 4, 2026, at approximately 1:20 p.m., detectives located a victim in the 1600 block of North Smallwood Street suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.   Western District Shooting Detectives are investigating this incident and are asking anyone with additional information to contact them at 410-396-2477.   Those who wish to remain anonymous may utilize the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP. End of Watch, September 22, 1973 & 1858: Police Officers Calvin M. Rodwell and Benjamin Benton On Sept. 22, 1973, Police Officer Calvin Rodwell was shot and killed by an armed suspect near the intersection of Aisquith Street and Fayette Street. He was working a part-time job as a cab driver when his fare suddenly produced a pistol, ordered him out of the cab and stole it along with his cash bag. Minutes later, Officer Rodwell stopped another cab for help. Unbeknownst to him, the man who committed the robbery was in the back seat returning the borrowed gun to the other cab driver. When the cab stopped, the man shot him. The subject was arrested and charged with murder. The cab driver who lent him the gun was also charged with murder. Officer Rodwell had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for 13 years. We will never forget. _____________ On Sept. 22, 1858, Officer Benjamin Benton was shot and killed as he tried to break up a fight between the suspect and others. The suspect was convicted of murder after Police Officer Robert Rigdon testified in the trial. Officer Rigdon was shot and killed in retaliation for that testimony. Officer Benton had served with the agency for eight years. We will never forget.

Central District Hit & Run Arrest In reference to a hit-and-run crash that occurred on September 3, 2026, at the intersection of N. Charles and W. Fayette Streets, detectives have arrested 63-year-old Curtis Collick of Baltimore. On September 21, 2026, Collick was arrested and served with a warrant in the 4700 block of Mount Hope Drive. Officers transported him to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with failing to stop vehicle at the scene of an accident, failing to provide required information, and failing to render reasonable assistance to an injured person.

End of Watch, September 21, 1992: Police Officer Ira Neil Weiner   On September 21, 1992, Police Officer Ira Weiner succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained two days earlier while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 1900 block of West Mulberry Street.

As he entered the residence, a subject attacked him with an ice pick, stabbing him 31 times, including over the left eye. The subject then grabbed Officer Weiner's service weapon from its holster and shot him in the head.

The subject then exchanged shots with other responding officers as they arrived on the scene. The suspect was shot several times and killed during the shootout.

Officer Weiner was transported to a local hospital, where he remained on life support for two days when his organs were donated.   Officer Weiner had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for four years. He was survived by his parents. We will never forget.

End of Watch, September 20, 1986 & 1915: Police Officers Robert Alexander & Herbert Bitzel   On September 20, 1986, Police Officer Robert Alexander was struck by a vehicle and killed while investigating an accident at the intersection of Frederick Avenue and Boswell Road. He had safely positioned his vehicle with his lights activated to alert oncoming traffic. While speaking with the persons involved in the accident, a vehicle operated by a drunk driver swerved around the corner. Officer Alexander was able to push the two citizens out of the way of the vehicle before being struck, saving their lives. Still, the vehicle flipped over and pinned Officer Alexander beneath it. Rescue services were on the scene within minutes because Officer Alexander had called them for the initial accident. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Officer Alexander had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for one year.  We will never forget. _______________ On September 20, 1915,  Police Officer Herbert Bitzel was killed after being struck by a street car near the intersection of Edmonson Avenue and North Arlington Avenue. He had boarded the streetcar along with his sergeant and several other officers. He was standing on the front step of the front platform when he fell for unknown reasons and was struck by the streetcar. He was transported to Franklin Square Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Bitzel had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for two years and was assigned to the Northwestern District. We will never forget.

End of Watch, September 19, 1958: Police Officer Robert K. Nelson On September 19, 1958, Police Officer Robert Nelson succumbed to injuries received in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Broadway and Chase Street. Officer Nelson was traveling northbound on Broadway when he was struck by a vehicle that did not yield while turning. He never regained consciousness and died five days later at St. Joseph's Hospital. A month earlier, Officer Nelson was shot at while attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect. Officer Nelson was a United States Army veteran who served with the Baltimore Police Department for 18 months. We will never forget.

Investigators continue to ask for the public’s help locating Baltimore’s Most Wanted, 24 y/o Dashawn Taylor. Taylor is wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of 38 y/o Asia Williams that occurred on June 23, 2026, in the 5200 blk of York Rd, where a 27 y/o male was also shot.
