Well done
If your offense is near the bottom every season while playing SF, Oak, Colorado, etc. it is going to be atrocious against 1 of the remaining Top 8 teams.
Possibly my last GuardsBurner essay of the season:
It will be annoying seeing people who don’t watch Cleveland say “the Guardians play the same season every year.”
But there is an element of truth to that statement, even if it’s not fully accurate.
Every regular season the Guardians punch above their weight. They ride elite pitching and just enough offense to an AL Central title. But what they also do is steal improbable wins.
Just look at the White Sox season series. Two of their wins were Brayan Rocchio walk-offs. One homer off the pole and one popup over a shallow left fielder. Another win was a Petey Halpin left-on-left homer. Another was a Khalil Watson walk-off.
Stealing wins from the jaws of defeat is thrilling but it’s not sustainable in October.
We saw it in 2024. David Fry had a game-saving homer in Detroit. Lane Thomas hit a grand slam off Tarik Skubal. Then Jhonkensy Noel kept the season alive with a miracle homer against New York.
It almost happened again tonight with Jo Adell.
But eventually that magic runs out and the better team wins. You can’t get to the World Series relying on heroics every night. You need a roster, and specifically an offense, that is just flat out better than the opponent.
Until Cleveland builds that team, we’ll keep having exciting regular seasons and a few memorable postseason moments, but the drought will continue.
