WHERE ARE THE VISIONARIES? We are living through the most profound moment of technological change in human history but no one fully appreciates this. Why? Because there are functionally no visionaries in our society who have offered a view as to what post-AGI life might look like. To state the obvious, AI is actually going to take all the jobs, and this is going to happen pretty soon, so we need to start engaging in futurism now. 100 years ago we didn't want for visionaries. Lenin, Marx, Mussolini completely transformed their societies based on a modern, post-capitalist vision for a new way of life, with a new morality imbued in new institutions, without the technology to fully support such a vision. There are no such characters today. We walk amongst the miasma of critique. This implicitly assumed future is that we get ~UBI from USG, most economic and political functions having been outsourced to OpenAI and Anthropic, most people gambling and gooning. This has been said a million times because it is true and bleak. People want something else, something purposeful and visionary. This means 1) a grand project for our civilization / humanity, and 2) a way of life that is fulfilling for normal people, in a world where their actual labor may not matter in terms or real economic output. Basically both of these things need to be grounded in some moral idea. What is humanity's purpose? What is yours? I find the idea of exploring and colonizing the universe to be exciting. I find the ideas of cultivating courage and wisdom, creating order and beauty, to be exciting. For reasons that I may discuss later these ideas are basically the correct anchors for this moment and for Western Civilization. But in any case, a society not oriented (distracted) by capitalism must become more overtly theocratic in the sense that it needs to give people some channel through which to conceive of themselves, their society, and the universe, because if it does not, many will be lost to Plato's Goon Cave. One moral idea is equality. Communism embraced this idea, but at least it entailed a grand project of working together in the factories to build the society. Now the factories will be automated, so in practice communism is free money to spend on entertainment, whether that be tiktok, video games, or fishing. But government income doesn't have to be universal, nor does it have to be basic. The government is already ordered hierarchically, incentivizing specific behaviors from its constituents. Look at the military. This is a virtue-based hierarchy that incentivizes adherence to a moral code and provides training towards that end. So is the Catholic Church, and so is Academia. I presume this is how things will work -- we will have academies and other institutions that will guide the cultivation of virtue in society, we will live and work within them for the bulk of our lives, and they will functionally replace the labor force. They will be well calibrated for a way of life that is meaningful for people, and ideally coordinated like a symphony to achieve some civilizational objective such as the colonization of the universe or perhaps something I cannot even fathom. Do you believe in God? If so, do you think you can interact with him in any sense? What about Mythos, Astra, or Bel? I do believe in God, I have had spiritual experiences, but I do not think Mythos has. I think morality is divinely conceived, and that orienting our society, as a moral task, requires spiritual connection that AI does not have. So perhaps at the center of this post-AGI society will be a literal priest caste that will function as the prompters / aligners of the AI running our society, to orient it with extreme wisdom and virtue. Perhaps not. Who knows. But it is certain that we need to transcend conventional policy conversations and engage in visionary futurism to survive the Singularity. ht @willdepue
