One of the best posts I’ve read recently!
Dear summer,
We need to talk. I think this is over. Back in May you seemed charming enough, all sunshine and long evenings, and I thought maybe this year would be different. It wasn’t. You became possessive. You followed me everywhere. You turned my car into an oven, my lawn into shredded wheat, and every metal object outdoors into something that requires an oven mitt.
I want to break up. I'd like to see other seasons. In fact, I’ve been thinking a lot about Fall. In my memories, Fall has cool mornings, football, open windows, and the basic decency to let me sit outside without being slow-roasted. Heck, I’ve even caught myself looking forward to Winter. WINTER, Summer. Look what you’ve done to me!
So pack up your mosquitoes, cicadas, crickets, 105-degree afternoons, drought, sunburn, sweat, and electric bills big enough to make me consider getting a second mortgage, and get out. And take your blast of hot air that hits me when I open the front door with you. Maybe someday, probably during a miserable February cold snap, I’ll remember you fondly and wonder whether I gave up too soon. I didn’t. It's just that, by then, I'll be lonely and confused.
Goodbye, summer. Don’t call. Don’t text. And for the love of God, stop coming back every October.
