20 years ago, we started with a simple idea: Mental Health is a Human Right. Reflecting on #BasicNeeds@20, we are moved by how far the global conversation has come. From a "footnote" in 2005 to a primary focus in 2026 – progress is real, and we are just getting started.

Hearing, "I've been there and I understand," provides comfort to those struggling in silence. Voices of those who have walked the path, change the mental health conversation. This is why @BasicNeeds_KE @CBM_Global_KE put lived experience at the forefront of mental health advocacy

Suicide Prevention is an everyday commitment, not just a single calendar date. Mental health struggles don't pause when the awareness day ends. Let's therefore checking in with our relatives, friends and colleagues because one conversation can save a life. #StarttheConversation

It may be your neighbor.. It may be your quiet coworker.. It may be your outgoing friend.. The reality is that you never know who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide. Therefore, make an effort to check in with them and ask how they are doing. #Worldsuicideawarenessday2026

Access to mental health care should not depend on where you live, what you earn, or whether services are available in your community. We must increase investment in mental health, expand community-based services, and integrate mental health into all levels of healthcare to build a system where everyone can access timely and quality care. When mental health is not consistently integrated into routine healthcare, opportunities for early detection, intervention, and timely care are missed. With 1 in 4 outpatients experiencing mental health conditions and 40% of inpatients experiencing mental health conditions, integration at the primary care level is essential. We need routine mental health screening and management at the primary care level to ensure no one is left behind. #mentalhealthintegration

In many Kenyan communities, mental health conditions are often misunderstood as spiritual attacks, a lack of willpower, or character flaws, among others. @BasicNeeds_KE @CBM_Global_KE and @DOHKilifi are collaborating to erradicate these deeply rooted beliefs through training CHPs

People with lived experience of mental health conditions are experts in their own journeys, and mlcan meaningfully lead in programmes that challenge such myths and beliefs in our communities. Fantastic work @BasicNeeds_KE & @DOHKilifi. It is wonderful partnering on this. 🙌🙌

Mental health services only make a difference when people can access them. With approximately 85% of Kenyans unable to access care, strengthening our systems must mean making support available, affordable and closer to communities when they need it.
