Music theory can genuinely drive you crazy because an augmented unison sounds exactly like a minor second.
But they aren't the same interval theoretically.
Why? Because intervals are named by both their distance in letters AND their distance in pitch. Letter distance is the key.
Let's take A as the root note:
Augmented Unison (A1) = A to A#
You stay on the same letter name (A to A), but you raise the pitch by a half step. Same letter, bigger distance = augmented.
Minor Second (m2) = A to Bb
You move to the next letter name (A to B), but you keep the distance as small as possible - a half step. Different letter, small distance = minor second.
Same sound on a piano. Different spelling. This is called "enharmonic equivalence".
