The Biden Administration waged war on tech based on the theory that it was going to win back working class votes. Not only was that dead wrong (we lost working class share), but it shrunk the Democratic tent and turned off Silicon Valley Democrats.
NEW: The big tech midterm realignment could have huge implications in 2028. Trump has made his party the defenders of Silicon Valley execs. Democrats see a populist windfall. The proof is in the ad spending data. theatlantic.com/politics/202…

Sprawl isn't the solution to California's housing woes, but it can be part of the solution. Here's hoping that Prop 45 passes in November.
Great step back from @ConorDougherty on Prop. 45 and how the question of sprawl in California is at the center of the measure nytimes.com/2026/10/15/busin…

Simple questions all DSA candidates must be asked: - Do you support the current form of government in Cuba? - Do you support government ownership over key industries? - Do you support the Nordic economic model? If so, do you support lowering taxes on corporations to their lower level and balancing the budget through a national sales tax of over 20%? - Do you support the dictatorship of the proletariat as a form of government?

Some people would like SF to be like one giant co-op board so that they can personally approve or veto every new resident.
hey, actually if you moved here to work in AI, it's not "your hood". hope this helps! ❤

Seems like most of this is SoCal, which is odd as you'd think that the huge rent increases in the Bay Area, combined with state housing laws, would have boosted things here too. What gives?
Well, look at that. CA is seeing a big increase in multifamily housing permits. We passed historic CEQA reforms w/AB 130 to make it easier to build housing & now we’re seeing momentum. There’s still lots of work to do, but this is an encouraging sign. ocregister.com/2026/10/08/ca…

SF spends double any other major city on its fire department, which is just a bunch of emergency response in a giant expensive truck-sized trench coat. We should reform firefighter hiring and pay, reduce the number of fighter fighters, give them smaller vehicles, close down 8 fire stations (of 48!) which see fewer than 3 calls per day, and most importantly, stop blindly Respecting whatever they say about single-stair reforms, lane widths, outdoor dining, etc. My friend reacted to hearing my anti-fire-department screed by asserting that SF firefighters are hot -- I would also support assigning 5% of our firefighters to do PR work at Beaux. They're good with poles.

Trump Administration figured out a way to get me to oppose a data center project.
BREAKING: Russia and the US are discussing building US data centers running on Russian nuclear power, per Putin's economic envoy Dmitriev. "We are discussing joint projects in the field of Russia-USA data centers, including with the use of our nuclear power plants," Dmitriev says. He says Putin and Trump are discussing a wide range of projects. "I think we will be announcing some important initiatives in the near future." "We have previously said that there is a very large synergistic effect between Russia and the United States in the Arctic, in the LNG sector, and in other energy projects," Dmitriev adds.

Neoliberalism is when car stays on ground.
These 3.5 seconds did more to fortify American Identity than any establishment politician or political party in the last generation. 100 years of neoliberal rule was vaporized in 3.5 seconds. Rejoice, we are still America. 🇺🇸

Man, I wish we had some Republicans like this in California. As it stands I don't think you could make a minyan.
If you want better parties, you have to make better parties. Enter: Maximum Republicans. New York needs a competitive political ecology, and two parties that compete to offer a strong, positive vision of governance. Here's my part of that grand project: maximumnewyork.com/p/maximum…

This is the way.
NEW from me is a major Brookings Institution study, “The Progressive Case for Social Security and Medicare Reform." It argues that refusing to reform benefits would radically redistribute income *upwards* from working families to wealthier seniors. 🧵 brookings.edu/articles/the-p…

This was the #2 reason why my friends who have kids end up leaving SF (first is, of course, housing costs). Great that we're finally fixing it. Your kids shouldn't have to go to a school an hour away from your house.
Yesterday, the Board of Education took an important step toward ending the public school lottery and giving families the certainty they need to put down roots in our city. Starting in the 2028–29 school year, families will know which neighborhood public elementary school their children are assigned to based on their home address, while retaining choices that reflect the incredible diversity of San Francisco.  I am also pleased that this direction includes a commitment to ensuring our schools have the resources they need, so parents can feel confident that whichever school their children attend, they will find a welcoming environment where they can learn and thrive. I want to thank the Board of Education and SFUSD leadership, including School Board President Phil Kim and SFUSD Superintendent Maria Su, for helping make San Francisco a city where more families can build their futures.

Six Nobel Prize-winning economists, and @gabriel_zucman, have endorsed California's proposed billionaire tax. But what do economists who actually specialize in taxation think? I surveyed them to find out. Turns out they don't support it. 🧵
A one-time 5% wealth tax would bring Silicon Valley’s billionaires’ wealth back to where it was just 31 days ago, on September 7. When it was "just" 178% higher than on January 1, 2023. They’d rather let 3 million people lose their health insurance than let that happen.

We could do a lot worse than "fewer trillionaires and more millionaires" as pro-capitalist Dem messaging, but I'm pretty sure the places with more of the former will also have more of the latter.
.@JamesTalarico: I want to get back to the kind of capitalism we had in the middle of the 20th century in this country. I want competition, but it’s got to be fair competition. We’ve got to take on these monopolies, this consolidation, because again it’s fundamentally anti-capitalist. Right now, our tax system literally taxes work more than it taxes wealth. I’m advocating for a return to original capitalist principles where we actually reward work instead of wealth—an economy that creates fewer trillionaires and more millionaires.

Ceding the country's most innovative industry, populated largely by diverse urbanites, to a party that openly pines to turn back the clock to 1950s or earlier and is lousy with racist chuds would be an incredible L for no reason. We can't let it happen.
I’m starting to think the divorce of Dems and tech is probably permanent unless/until a new major industry shows up. There’s just almost nothing either side wants from the other than blood. We’re past needing couples therapy and onto debating custody of the kids (CA and NY).

Donald Trump won two presidential elections by promising to put American workers first. Ahead of the 2026 midterms, we @InnovateEconomy have asked American workers themselves how they judge the president’s economic stewardship and what they think about the key economic issues of our time. The findings should deeply worry Republicans. Let's start with tariffs, the president's signature economic policy: While in 2025 a sizable share of workers gave the president the benefit of the doubt, a year and a half on from Liberation Day, workers have soured on tariffs mightily. Perhaps the survey's single most important finding is the collapse of support for tariffs among blue-collar workers specifically. While in 2025 blue-collar workers expressed net support for the policy (49 percent to 46 percent), these ostensible tariff beneficiaries now oppose tariffs 58 percent to 36 percent.

Yes, and the hilarious thing is that "welfare state capitalism" used to be called "neoliberalism"
There are many points one can gesture at to argue that Capitalism has won but one of my favorites is that most modern self-described socialists have no interest in worker ownership of the means of production and instead just want welfare state capitalism.
