Another busy night of street outreach in downtown Calgary. 💚 Yesterday, our BeTheChangeYYC outreach team was back out across the downtown core, travelling from 8th Street to Tomkins Park, through nearby alleyways, and around the 7th Avenue LRT corridor, meeting people where they were and providing practical support throughout the evening. In just one shift, our team: ❤️ Connected with 95 people 🏕️ Identified 50 people experiencing rough sleeping 💧 Distributed 60 bottles of water 🧦 Provided 20 pairs of socks 🧥 Handed out 8 jackets 🧤 Distributed 30 toques and 5 pairs of gloves 🍲 Provided 22 canned meals/noodles, along with protein snacks, fruit and other food 🩹 Distributed 19 naloxone kits 🎒 Provided 4 backpacks/tote bags, along with hygiene and dental supplies As Calgary moves further into fall and temperatures continue to drop, warm clothing, food, water and harm-reduction supplies are becoming even more important. But outreach is about much more than the supplies in our wagons. It is about showing up consistently, building trust, listening, sharing available resources, and making sure people know someone is there. Another busy Saturday outreach shift in downtown Calgary. 💙 Last night, our BeTheChangeYYC team connected with 95 people across Stephen Avenue and the East Village. Throughout the shift, our team provided immediate support while helping connect people with longer-term resources: 🏠 3 housing referrals/connections 🪪 3 ID clinic referrals 🍽️ 6 food-resource connections 🛏️ 2 emergency shelter connections 🩹 3 first-aid interventions 💜 1 naloxone response 🚑 EMS was called twice when additional medical support was needed We also distributed water, food, warm clothing, harm-reduction supplies and other essentials throughout the afternoon. A huge thank you to Team Lead Garth and volunteers Mariam, Bruce, Hilal, Morgan, Signe and Luke for giving their Saturday to support our community. Last night, our BeTheChangeYYC outreach team connected with 85 people across Calgary, including 45 people reported as sleeping outside. Team Lead Graham and volunteer Alejandro started the evening along 17th Avenue and Tomkins Park, where they had a great first round connecting with people in the community. Later, while conducting outreach near the 7th Avenue LRT station, the shift changed quickly. Our team encountered a person experiencing an overdose. 911 was called and two doses of naloxone were administered while our team waited for EMS to arrive. While Graham responded to the medical emergency, Alejandro stepped up and managed both outreach carts and supplies, helping keep the team and their equipment together during a challenging situation. Afterward, the team took time to check in and debrief before finishing the shift. This is part of what street outreach can look like. Some nights are about food, water, clothing, referrals and conversations. Other nights, our volunteers find themselves responding to a life-threatening emergency. We are incredibly grateful for the people who continue to show up for our community. 💙 85 people supported. 45 people sleeping rough. 2 doses of naloxone administered. 1 emergency response.
