BREAKING: A top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee DEMANDS immediate explanations from Pete Hegseth and his Navy Secretary about the USS Lincoln's worsening mental health crisis — and the sailors trying to jump overboard. Recent reports in the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes have revealed that the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are struggling with the psychological stress of their record-breaking nine-month deployment. They have been at sea without touching land for 250 days straight, all in support of Trump's illegal, pointless war with Iran. Pete Hegseth — who is insulated completely from the consequences of this murderous conflict on his sprawling estate while our service men and women bear the cost overseas — claimed today that the situation aboard the Lincoln is being "completely misrepresented." As always with this pathologically dishonest alcoholic, it's safe to presume that the truth is the opposite of whatever he says. In his letter, Senator Blumenthal pointed out that overly long deployments for aircraft carriers have become the norm under President Trump who, it should be noted, is a draft-dodger with no appreciation for our military members and their sacrifices. "Recent carrier deployments have repeatedly stretched beyond their originally anticipated durations, suggesting that extended deployments may be becoming a feature rather than an exception of the Navy's force-generation model," Blumenthal wrote. "The Administration has yet to adequately explain the objectives, end state, or anticipated duration of those operations. If the Administration intends to maintain a prolonged military campaign or an elevated carrier presence in the region, it must explain how it intends to ensure today's operational requirements do not create tomorrow's readiness crisis," he added. The letter demands that Hegseth and Cao reply with an overview of the Navy's plans to sustain the carrier strike groups in the Middle East for the next 12 to 24 months, as well as details about the authorization process for the Lincoln's prolonged deployment. On top of that, Blumenthal wants information on the "habitability, supply and quality-of-life problems" aboard the Lincoln and a rundown of how the Navy is monitoring the "fatigue, morale, mental health and crew readiness." This debacle proves once again that Republicans love to screech about "supporting the troops" but in practice they are the worst enemies of our service members. They take these brave men and women for granted and needlessly thrust them into harm's way and needlessly grueling conditions. Blumenthal's letter is a brilliant strategic move for Democrats because it creates a robust paper trail ahead of the midterms. Once we retake control of Congress, we can point to these communications and begin issuing subpoenas to expose the truth of Hegseth's historic mismanagement of the U.S. military.
