The second-largest reservoir in the U.S. has dropped to record-low water levels.
These satellite images show Colorado’s Lake Powell in 2017, when water levels were high, and now in 2026, when snow drought and unusually warm temperatures have driven water levels to record lows.

But the alfalfa farming in the Southwest must be addressed.
An absolutely insane amount of water for such little positive impact for the region & country
1 trillion gallons of Colorado River water is consumed annually by alfalfa. That’s nearly twice the amount of water used to irrigate all golf courses in America.

The Colorado River crisis will be a defining moment in US history. The river supplies 40 million people; Mead and Powell, two of the nation’s largest reservoirs, are at record lows.
Filling them near full would take ~8 consecutive very wet winters, a statistical impossibility.
