Meta ($META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he is “quite optimistic” about artificial intelligence and pushed back against the idea that advanced AI requires an industry-wide slowdown or coordinated pause. Asked directly whether AI could “kill us,” Zuckerberg argued that companies can manage risks internally as long as they develop and deploy systems responsibly. He pointed to Meta’s Muse AI agent as an example. Zuckerberg said the company had a strong version of Muse ready months earlier but delayed its release while working through privacy and security concerns. His argument is that trust will ultimately determine adoption. If users do not believe an AI system is safe, private or reliable, Zuckerberg said they will simply be less willing to use it. Zuckerberg also believes the next major challenge in AI will shift beyond making models smarter. He highlighted instruction following, understanding user intent and “values alignment” as increasingly important areas. At some point, he suggested, another improvement in math or benchmark performance may matter less than whether an AI reliably understands what a person actually wants and acts accordingly. Zuckerberg also argued that AI companies have strong commercial incentives to solve safety problems because poorly controlled systems would damage consumer trust and adoption. His position differs from some AI leaders calling for broader coordination or slower development. Tesla ($TSLA) has released a new teaser for its upcoming Roadster ahead of an Oct. 1 reveal, while Elon Musk says high-volume production of the Tesla Semi is now underway. The Roadster teaser appears to show a new front light bar and includes the word “Roadster” alongside an “X,” though Tesla has not explained whether that references SpaceX ($SPCX). Musk has previously said the next-generation Roadster could use SpaceX-developed cold-gas thrusters, potentially giving the vehicle performance capabilities far beyond a conventional sports car. At the same time, Tesla announced that high-volume Semi production has begun. Musk described the electric truck as a “sports car in truck form” and said it will have access to Tesla’s Megacharger network. Tesla also plans to add autonomous-driving capabilities to the Semi in the “very near future,” according to Musk. The company is targeting annual production of roughly 50,000 Semis at its 1.8 million-square-foot manufacturing facility. Tesla has already secured major commercial orders, including a 500-unit agreement with Swedish freight technology company Einride, which expects to receive about 75 trucks by the end of 2026. Morgan Stanley ($MS) has estimated that the Semi business could add roughly $80 billion to Tesla’s market value under a bull-case scenario. The updates give Tesla two major product stories at once: the Roadster as a high-performance showcase and the Semi as a potentially large commercial transportation business.
