This unrelated Gomantak Samaj, certainly formed at shrewd machination by Dvivarna lobby, has greatly damaged social capital of real Konkanastha Kulin Marathas. Returning to the topic - Chardo term means both Hindu and Christan converts of the true Maratha Kshatriya community. Chardo Christians were always fluid across religions, because unlike Islamic conversions where Marathas would be forced to marry Arab, Persian, Turk women to destroy their bloodline, the Chardo Christian would be majorly pureblood (until just recently) & strongly caste-conscious. Depending on the wave of invasions by mainland Hindu Marathas (of Bhonsale Hindupat Padshahi State), the Chardo Christians of different regions express pride or ambivalence in their Maratha Kshatriya origins accordingly. It depends purely on each regions' historical experiences. Most of Christian Chardos are naturally "secular", "Pro-Hindu" and their interactions with Hindu Chardo counterparts also makes them not think twice about Maratha brand, supporting Indian Nationalism & Bhonsale Chattrapati era glory. And they are immune to Konkani exceptionalism. The Hardliner Christian Chardos (used to be rare, but now alarmingly increasing thanks to the asinine RW) care nothing for Maratha term, but just Chardo / Kshatriya. Still they are the same exact 96 Kulin Maratha community as in rest of Deccan, provided the endogamy is retained. The main trouble is them forgetting their clan names, and confusing the origin lores too. Kadam (Kadamba), Salunkhe (Chalukya), Surve - Rane / Raorane, & then possibly Mores, etc. Overwhelming Suryavanshis. Chalukyas are apparent Somavanshi but of Ayodhya, so it's conflated too. Just like the Hindu Marathas developed Devak system (stolen by other castes) to override the multiple Gotra mess, the Konkani Christian & Hindu Chardo Marathas have Vangod records in documentation to at least preserve clan names independently, even if devoid of elaborate details. It's only recently that some of the Christian Chardos began marrying into other castes like Bamon. Nothing more serious than Hindu counterparts doing the same due to lax society. Anyways, under lieu of Konkani unity, lot of Usual Suspects now try to split Chardos from Marathas. Further the Wikipedia page on Chardo caste is completely destroyed by same Non-Maratha Konkani chauvinist editors. Chardos associated with Pan-Indian Kshatriya aristocrat social continuity, but are only and only Marathas and have nothing to do with Khatris, Prabhus, Sonars, etc. true Chardos of functional households are such staunch proud Kshatriyas (with emphasis on pure bloodline) that this is an extreme insult for them. And the neech Usual Suspects did this using outdated garbage fake baseless or misrepresented sources to satiate their perversity. These Usual Suspects' Christian counterparts like Jerome Saldanha of Mangalore freely wrote articles establishing his own original Hindu caste as "Aryan", while associating the Marathas deliberately (with literal LIES) to Shudra castes and what not. Education brings no civility! Chardos are absolutely nothing but same exact 96 Kulin Maratha caste as found in Sahyadris, North Konkan, Marathwada, etc. with NO other influx. Propaganda linking Vani, Khatri (out of nowhere) & others is by those with cheap agenda to establish Marathas as mixed hotpotch caste! The Maratha caste page on Wikipedia similarly calls Marathas a mix of random sub-altern castes, because it is based on SAME Konkan polemic discourse pattern by the original Konkani casteist parties.
