Last week, I joined my colleague, Chidera Rosecamille Aneke, founder of Art for Health Initiative, for a two-day workshop with 26 Fine Arts undergraduates at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Pan-Atlantic University. Themed “What We Carry,” the workshop explored the intersection of art, public health, mental health and storytelling. From public health communication to mental health and resilience, the students explored how lived experiences and health knowledge can be transformed into art that sparks conversations and inspires action. It was inspiring to see their creativity in action and a reminder that art is not just about aesthetics; it can also be a powerful language for communicating health. #ArtForHealth #HealthCommunication #MentalHealth #Storytelling

🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month While not all breast cancers can be prevented, adopting healthy habits can help reduce your risk. Here are some steps to consider: Know your breasts, be familiar with how they normally look and feel, and report unusual changes promptly. Stay physically active, regular exercise can help lower breast cancer risk. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. Limit alcohol consumption, alcohol can increase the risk of breast cancer. Avoid smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke. Know your family history and discuss your risk with a healthcare professional if breast or ovarian cancer runs in your family. Go for recommended breast screening based on your age, risk and local health guidance. Most importantly, don’t ignore changes such as a new lump, unusual nipple discharge, skin changes or a change in breast shape or size. Seek medical attention early. 🎀 This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s prioritise prevention, early detection and timely care. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastHealth #EarlyDetection #WomensHealth #CancerAwareness

Today is World Postpartum Haemorrhage Day. Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is severe bleeding after childbirth and a leading cause of maternal deaths worldwide. An estimated 27 million women experience PPH every year, with about 43,000 women dying annually, one death every 12 minutes. Nigeria’s maternal health crisis demands action. We must equip PHCs, strengthen emergency obstetric care, employ more skilled health workers and improve their welfare. Better care. Safer births. Save lives. #PPH #MaternalHealth #SafeMotherhood #postpartumhaemorrhage #postpartumhaemorrhageday

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time to raise awareness about breast cancer, amplify the experiences of those affected, and call for better access to early diagnosis, timely treatment and quality care. This year’s theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” reminds us that no two breast cancer experiences are exactly the same. A person’s journey may be shaped by their diagnosis, treatment options, support system, financial circumstances and, importantly, whether they can access the care they need. Everyone affected by breast cancer deserves support, dignity and quality care, wherever they live. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2024: • 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide. • 694,000 women died from the disease. • 8.2 million women were living with breast cancer at the end of the year. Breast cancer occurs in every country and can affect women at any age after puberty, with incidence increasing later in life. Importantly, around 80% of breast cancers occur in women with no specific risk factors. While breast cancer outcomes have improved in many countries, major inequalities in access to care remain. Where someone lives can affect how quickly they are diagnosed and whether they can access effective treatment , contributing to significant differences in survival between countries. 🎀 This October, let’s promote awareness, encourage timely medical attention and support efforts to make quality breast cancer care accessible to everyone. Every story is unique. Every journey matters. 💗 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #BreastCancerAwareness #EveryStoryMatters #BreastCancer #EarlyDetection #CancerAwareness #WomensHealth #GlobalHealth

Na dat kolos go kpai you 😡😡 A 29-year-old man, identified as Ebikeme Seiye from Akede community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has been arrested over the alleged rape of a 5-year-old girl, identified as Oyeintari Idonwanbofa. The suspect was reportedly arrested on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps, Amassoma Cluster, following a report made by the child’s elder cousin, Tobokeakpo Selekeme. According to the report, Seiye allegedly confessed to the act during questioning and reportedly claimed he was under the influence of hard drugs, locally known as “Kolos”. The Community Safety Corps subsequently handed him over to the Amassoma Police Divisional Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution. Meanwhile, the child has been taken to a hospital, where she is receiving medical care. Cases involving the sexual abuse of children require urgent medical attention, protection of the child, proper investigation and accountability through the law.

A few days ago, I had the privilege of touring Pearl Oncology Specialist Hospital, Lekki, to gain firsthand insight into how cancer care is delivered and how patients are managed. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and staffed by qualified healthcare professionals. We were taken through different departments, with each team explaining their processes and how they contribute to cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. I particularly appreciates the psychosocial support provided to patients, including access to a psychologist. Cancer can be physically, emotionally and financially overwhelming, so having professional psychological support as part of patient care is an important step towards treating the person, not just the disease. Cancer is undoubtedly a frightening disease and can be deadly. But early detection and timely treatment can make a significant difference, and this was evident in the stories of some cancer survivors treated by Pearl Oncology Specialist Hospital in collaboration with Sebeccly Cancer Center. Beyond treatment, however, we must address the wider challenges surrounding cancer care in Nigeria. Governments at all levels, private organisations and well-meaning Nigerians need to do more to: • Reduce the financial burden of cancer treatment on patients and their families. • Support the establishment and equipping of more cancer centres. • Invest in the training and retraining of healthcare professionals. • Improve the welfare and working conditions of healthcare workers. • Promote affordable and accessible cancer screening and regular health checks. • Encourage Nigerians to prioritise early detection rather than waiting until symptoms become severe. Cancer care should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. The earlier cancer is detected, the greater the opportunity to intervene. And every opportunity to save a life is worth investing in.

This is actually important because it’s at the centre of tradition, the grassroots, especially traditional and religious leaders need to be sensitized.
To be honest laws without awareness and sensitization doesn't go far. It's like cutting the flowers of a 20yrs old tree. It's roots are still standing firm. In my opinion I think all traditional rulers big and small should be made to issue a decree. This is a cultural problem.

If it’s not inequality, then why should a woman be denied inheritance simply because she is a woman? 🫩 The Attorney-General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, has initiated steps towards prosecuting those who deny women and girls their right to inherit property because of their sex. In a letter to the Nigeria Police Force, the Attorney-General directed that complaints of gender-based disinheritance be thoroughly investigated and that case files be forwarded to his office for prosecution. According to the letter, denying women and girls their right to inherit property because they are female constitutes an offence under Section 22 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2017 of Anambra State, punishable by up to four years’ imprisonment. The Attorney-General has also designated the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Unit of his ministry to handle the prosecution of offenders in such cases. This is significant because the Supreme Court has previously declared discriminatory customs and practices that prevent women from inheriting property unconstitutional and illegal. Yet, despite these judicial pronouncements, some women and girls still face discrimination when it comes to inheritance. A woman should not have to prove that she deserves what the law already says she has a right to inherit. The question is: How many women are still being denied their inheritance simply because they were born female?

“No Barriers, Just Choices” is the theme of this year’s World Contraception Day, but for millions of people around the world, that promise remains unfulfilled. Globally, the number of women using modern contraception has nearly doubled since 1990, reaching 874 million in 2021. Yet, an estimated 164 million women of reproductive age still have an unmet need for family planning. For some women, modern contraceptive methods may come with side effects or may simply not be suitable for them. But that does not mean they have no options. Couples can also explore fertility awareness-based methods, with proper information and guidance, to help prevent unintended pregnancy. Access to accurate information and a range of safe, voluntary family-planning options is important. Contraception can help prevent unintended pregnancies, improve women’s health and contribute to reducing maternal deaths. The goal should be simple: no barriers to information, no coercion, and informed choices that work for individuals and couples. 💚 #worldcontraceptiveday #familyplannig #worldcontraceptiveday2026 #fertilityawareness #nobarriersjustchoice

“For the sake of the ministry and for the sake of children “, “I bear his name and because I love God I must love everything that comes from him”. The other mama said “to save the embarrassment”, who dem suppose embarrass if no be person wey go patronize a whore and has no money to pay? 🤷 some older generation women are enablers and that’s why some men of today also feel entitled to certain aspects of marriage. The guy too is saying what I don’t understand and the comment section is also a mess😡 All I can say is, may we marry right 🤲
Interesting 🤔, I feel most people already knows what my answer will be. But for the avoidance of doubt, Every action has/ have consequences. If I was the one in such situations will He pay? What ever He will do I will too. Life is very simple, matters like this are dealth with by laws of reciprocity in my book, its that simple What will you do ?

🚨 Are sanitary pads in Nigeria safe? Women deserve answers. It’s been over a week since concerns emerged online over claims that some popular sanitary pad brands in Nigeria contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates. These chemicals have raised concerns because prolonged exposure to some VOCs and phthalates may have potential implications for women’s health, hormonal health and reproductive health. Since then, women have been sharing experiences online, including claims of changes in their menstrual cycles. But personal experiences alone cannot prove that sanitary pads caused those changes. That is exactly why proper scientific investigation is needed. Some people are already suggesting alternatives such as menstrual cups, tampons and even baby diapers, while others are calling for NAFDAC and relevant regulatory authorities to investigate the products and make their findings public. But here’s the question: Where is the official response? 🥹 Have the affected sanitary pad brands tested their products? Do they accept or refute the allegations? What does NAFDAC say about the safety of these products? Millions of Nigerian women use sanitary pads every month as part of basic menstrual hygiene. We shouldn’t have to choose between managing our periods and worrying about whether the products we use are safe. And this goes beyond sanitary pads. At a time when counterfeit and substandard products remain a major consumer-safety concern in Nigeria, we need stronger transparency, proper regulation and timely public communication. Women deserve evidence. Consumers deserve protection. And Nigerians deserve answers. So, which way Naija? 🥲 #SanitaryPads #SanitaryPadsInNigeria #MenstrualHealth #MenstrualHygiene #WomensHealth #NAFDAC #ConsumerSafety #ReproductiveHealth #VOCs #Phthalates #Nigeria
