We find this narrative both incomplete and unfair. Let’s be clear: the sharp July drawdown did expose real issues around leverage, liquidity management, and hedging. That is not something anyone should paper over. But turning a period of underperformance into a full rejection of the underlying methodology — and of multi-year judgment that previously delivered significant returns — is not rigorous analysis. It is selective storytelling. Leopold’s earlier calls from SanDisk ($SNDK) through Bloom Energy ($BE) generated meaningful outperformance. Year-to-date results still sit around the 80% level — a figure that places him among the stronger performers in the hedge fund space. Reducing leverage, maintaining public-market exposure, and testing a different approach is not denial. It is adaptation. What is more disappointing than any single strategy shortfall is the speed with which parts of the market move from performance discussion to personal animosity.
