Afghanistan’s Taliban government has effectively banned Bitcoin and crypto trading nationwide, threatening traders and businesses with prosecution.
More than 20 crypto shops shut down in Herat
At least 13 traders reportedly arrested
Monthly crypto inflows collapsed from a peak above $150 million to less than $80,000
Bitcoin and stablecoins had become important tools for savings and remittances after Afghanistan was largely cut off from the global banking system
Taliban officials have labeled digital assets fraudulent and argued that crypto speculation resembles gambling under Islamic law.
The crackdown has crushed Afghanistan’s visible crypto market, but it hasn’t eliminated Bitcoin itself.
Anyone with internet access, private keys and a willing counterparty can still transact.
You can shut down the exchanges. You can arrest the dealers. You can outlaw the asset.
You cannot shut down Bitcoin.
