Tell me your thoughts about AI as an intelligence gathering tool.
Yes, AI needs a lot of guardrails. I heard an expert say we need to treat it like nuclear weapons. We're worried about China's push to develop AI, so we're now in a race similar to the one that occurred when the US set off the first nuclear weapon, followed by Russia developing its own, and then China.
But, if AI can decipher real threats versus humans' misguided perceptions, then this is one of its benefits.
Here's an example. During Operation DESERT STORM, satellite imagery led intelligence analysts to believe that round circles in Kuwait City were chemical devices that could be remotely fired if we conducted an over-the-water assault. Two of our personnel went in and found only dugout defensive positions, not chemical agents. I have repeatedly seen analysts' imaginations run wild. I hope AI can decipher real threats versus human perceptions, which are sometimes off the mark.

Bonds forged during hardships are unlikely to break.
Recently, the Heroes in Conversation Forum asked me about camaraderie and shared hardship—foundations of our military that date back to the Revolutionary War. This was my answer:
In the early days of EOD and Delta, our small numbers allowed trust and bonds to form quickly. Leaving my teammates behind when my time in Vietnam ended was difficult but necessary. Today, only two of my teammates from that era are still alive, and we remain in close contact.

Over 70 percent of you are younger than I am by a few decades. My editor recently asked me what I hope the American public understands about my generation. This was my answer:
My generation often faced impossible situations, but we accepted the missions we were given. As stated in Isaiah 6:8: "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
We may not have been the greatest generation, but we are their proud sons and daughters, and we learned from them. I think we made them proud.

At our local T1D Ice Cream Social, kids’ eyes lit up when they saw a box of pink Barbies.
I told them they were getting their own.
They jumped up and down.
Within 20 minutes, they were out of the boxes and playing together.
