On the 85th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy, the President of Ukraine, Prime Minister @KoretskyiUA, members of the Government and foreign guests honored the memory of the victims of the Nazi massacre surl.li/mfpayz

I joined President @ZelenskyyUa and our distinguished guests today in honouring the victims of Babyn Yar. Almost 34 thousand Jews were killed here by the Nazis in just a few days in 1941. Nearly 100,000 Jews, Ukrainians, Roma, and people of different backgrounds were murdered here during the years of Nazi occupation. Eighty-five years later, Babyn Yar remains a warning of what happens when hatred prevails over life. Memory therefore carries responsibility. Antisemitism, racism, attempts to erase identity, and the denial of people’s right to exist must never be treated with indifference. Evil grows when it encounters silence and impunity. It matters deeply that representatives of Israel, Germany, and our other partners came to Kyiv today, despite Russia’s ongoing war, to remember the victims together with us. Our responsibility is to recognise hatred and dehumanisation before they become violence, and to act before impunity makes further crimes possible.

I met with Additional Minister in the Ministry of Finance of Israel Zeev Elkin, who is here now with the Israeli delegation for the anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy. It was a horrific tragedy, but it is important that they took the time to come here during these days of remembrance – days that Russia is trying to make extremely difficult for our people with its aerial terror. Of course, it was Iran that provided Russia with the technology to produce these jet-powered “shaheds,” and it has used essentially the same kind of weapon to attack Israel. We discussed these and other threats, as well as the overall situation in the Middle East. Strong relations between Ukraine and Israel could certainly contribute to our shared security.

These days remain a time of remembrance of the horrific tragedy of Babyn Yar for many people around the world. Today, government delegations from Israel and Germany came to Kyiv to honor the memory of nearly 100,000 Jews, Ukrainians, Roma, and people of different nationalities, professions, and faiths whom the Nazis murdered simply because they were different. Together with Israeli Minister Zeev Elkin, German Federal Minister Karin Prien, Chairman of the Directorate of the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center Dani Dayan, government officials, rabbis, and ambassadors, we lit memorial candles beside the menorah at Babyn Yar. It is important that, despite Russia’s brutal war, our partners are able to come to Kyiv on the 85th anniversary of this tragedy to pay tribute to all the innocent victims of this terrible crime. And it is our shared duty to stand united against evil so that such tragedies never happen again.

Today, as a birthday “gift” to Putin, the Russian army destroyed a residential building in Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region. It was an ordinary five-story apartment building. Tragically, as of now, five people have been reported killed and 26 injured, including five children. There may still be people under the rubble. First responders are working nonstop at the site – doing everything possible to find every person. Russian missile strikes also damaged five apartment buildings in Dnipro and four high-rise buildings in Kremenchuk. Tragically, two people were killed and eight injured. A high-rise building in Zaporizhzhia was damaged by a drone. In Kyiv, the Russians killed two people. Two more people were killed in Oleksandriya… My condolences to all the families and loved ones of those killed. Overall, infrastructure in Kyiv and 12 regions came under attack last night. One of the key targets was our energy infrastructure. The Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively. This was one of the most vile strikes: 70 missiles in total, many of them ballistic, as well as “shaheds.” Unfortunately, only some of them were shot down. Russian ballistic missiles remain the greatest challenge. And air defense packages for us right now are a vital necessity. That is why every day we are looking for missiles for Patriot systems that can and must actually protect people’s lives here, in Ukrainian skies. Thank you to everyone who is helping us.
