ICE must stop its efforts to deport Wilber Rafael Garces Perez and allow him to receive medical care. There must be an independent investigation and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law.
An ICE officer shot and wounded Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a Venezuelan man, on Sunday afternoon in Austin, local authorities said. Perez was making a DoorDash delivery Sunday afternoon when ICE officers in an unmarked truck sideswiped his car twice, attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch said. He was shot and taken to a hospital, she said, then released into ICE custody with a bullet still in his back. Perez was back in the hospital Monday night before returning to a federal detention center on Tuesday, according to his attorney

I strongly support Ukraine and efforts to hold Vladimir Putin accountable for his brutal war. I stand with the Ukrainian people and have repeatedly voted to support Ukraine.
However, I cannot support legislation that uses support for Ukraine as leverage to give Donald Trump even more authority to impose his reckless tariffs and trade wars that raise prices on American families.
At a time when families are already struggling with the affordability crisis, Congress should be working to lower costs, not giving Donald Trump another tool to increase them.

Today, I joined Norfolk International Airport’s tribute to those we lost 25 years ago on September 11, 2001, and to the police officers, firefighters and other first responders who answered the call to serve at the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the aftermath of the attacks.
We will never forget.

Secretary Lonnie Bunch has dedicated his career to ensuring the Smithsonian tells the full story of our nation. His historic leadership as the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture ensured that the African American experience is recognized as an essential part of the American story.
His retirement comes as President Trump continues his efforts to whitewash history and pressure the Smithsonian to conform to his preferred version of the past. We cannot learn from our history by pretending the most painful chapters never happened. I thank Secretary Bunch for his decades of service and his commitment to truth. The Smithsonian must remain independent and free from partisan interference.
Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch doesn't want Americans to be afraid of their country's history, saying the nation becomes better by telling the full, complicated story.
"Americans are an amazingly brave people. They have fought wars. They have overcome depression," he told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "I want Americans not to be afraid of their own history, to basically recognize that, by telling the fullness — and some of this is great stories of important leaders, and some of it is challenges we have to face, and some of it is challenges we have overcome — I think that makes you better as a nation, as a people."
His comments come as the institution faces pressure from the Trump administration over how to tell the American story.
Bunch, the Smithsonian’s first Black secretary, announced Tuesday that he is stepping down at the end of the year.
