Asked HMRC about their work on collecting unpaid taxes from wealthy people earlier on Committee. They have recruited more staff to work on the offshore risks but not at target yet. Also asked about actual figures for Non-Dom regime, but we won't know for certain until Jan 27.

There is a worrying trend of more and more UK businesses being bought out and moving overseas. This puts jobs at risk and threatens our economy. The Government needs to do more to ensure that Britain is a great place to grow and run a business.

It is disgraceful to learn of firms exploiting legal loopholes to avoid their responsibilities. Using administration as a backdoor to strip out compensation claims, while holding on to the profitable parts of the business sets a dangerous precedent. The FCA should be protecting consumers who were ripped off. Thirty years ago, the murder of Tamil school girl Krishanthy Kumaraswamy led to the discovery of the Chemmani mass graves. Nearly 600 human remains have been uncovered, making Chemmani the largest mass grave excavated in Sri Lanka. Tamil victims and families of the disappeared deserve truth, justice and accountability. There must be a fully funded, independent international investigation.

Our call for an independent review into the closure of the maternity unit has been answered. Two assessments are now underway following the discovery of problems with the building’s pipework. The first will look at whether the Women's Health Unit can remain open while repairs take place, and the second will explore whether services could be relocated elsewhere on the St Helier Hospital site. I will do everything I can to keep services at St Helier during the critical works.

People want to know that if their car is stolen, the police will investigate and bring those responsible to justice. But, instead when I speak to victims they say the police show up and simply give them a crime reference number. While it is good that Sutton has relatively low rates compared with the rest of London, it is an injustice every time this sort of crime goes unresolved. I don't know when it happened but somehow capitalism just gave up on competition. There is endless justification for Big Tech growth by so-called pro-market commentators. Britain should wise up and design domestic markets that allow our best to scale and compete globally.

Another British business flies away

One of the things I liked about the Labour for Growth pamphlet was its criticism of “everythingism”. So many projects these days lack focus, trying to cure every social ill in one go and being mediocre at all of them. This looks like what the Government is trying to tackle here, with more focused procurement criteria. I know some will think this means a call to abandon worthy causes like net zero and equality. That absolutely shouldn’t be the case. It just challenges us to think about where those causes are best served. If you layer it into every government procurement process you get one outcome: the big players, with the resources to bid write at scale, win every time. SMEs are snuffed out.
