Had a dude tell me yesterday, “I can’t believe you let your dog sleep on the bed.” Looka here… I’d let Checkers drive me to Dollar General if she wanted to. I’d probably even co-sign if she decided to buy her own property to run and raise hell in. Truth is one day I’ll look over and she won’t be on that bed snoring anymore. Until that day comes, she can sleep wherever she wants.

Stepped outside at work and it’s that basic b-word weather here. Pumpkin spice and all that’s nice. Kind of feel good temps that’s just perfect for sitting in a campground at Martinsville for tellin lies, while drinking a cold beer and eating one of those nasty hot dogs at 11:15 in the AM.

Had a good weekend back in the 757 seeing friends and family, eating good, and sitting in that same damn tunnel traffic. 😂 Sorry to the folks I missed. There’s never enough time to see everybody in one trip. We’ll be back for the holidays and hope to catch up with y’all then!

Happy 2nd Birthday to my sweet baby Checkers! In just two years you’ve learned how to give the best hugs, take up an entire bed and somehow make pillows spontaneously explode while you sit nearby looking completely innocent. You have turned this house into a home and then slowly started eating the home one cushion at a time. People tell me I rescued you but the truth is, we found each other exactly when we were supposed to. I wouldn’t trade the laughs or the toilet paper messes or the thousands of black hairs stuck to everything I own for anything. Happy Birthday sweet girl. Daddy loves you more than you’ll ever understand, even if you are the reason we can’t have nice things.

Happy 60th Birthday to Mama Judy! I’ve sat here trying to figure out what to write and the truth is they really ain’t enough words. For 38 years, you’ve been one of the few constants in my life. Through every good idea, every dumb idea, every racecar, every time I’ve been on top of the world and every time life has kicked me square in the nads… Mama has always been there. You have worried about me when I didn’t know you were worried. Prayed for me when I probably needed it more than I knew. Believed in me when some of my ideas didn’t give you much damn reason to. And no matter how old I get, there’s still something about knowing Mama and Daddy are there that makes the world feel a little less heavy. One day pictures like these here will be worth more to me than anything money could ever buy. So while we’re all still here to say it, I want to make sure I say it plenty….. I Love You Mama and HaPpY BiRtHdAy 🎂

I woke up this morning next to Checkers snoring and dreaming about kibbles n bits. When I turned the light on, I then noticed her pillow had sprung a leak at some point. She was doing soo good too, almost 30 days Sober. Y’all Internet Lawyers can’t defend her on this one.

Laboring my Day away with King Fred.

I was walking out of Florence Speedway the other night when I noticed a teenage race fan standing patiently at the pit gate fence with a diecast and wearing a shirt of his favorite driver. Unless you had a pit wristband you weren’t getting down there with all the NASCAR stars around. He had on a @03Butterbean shirt, so I told him I’d just talked to Bean’s mama and they should be coming out before too long. I started walking on toward the parking lot, then I just looked back. For a second I just remembered being that kid. Twenty years ago at Lanier Speedway, I was just a race fan trying to figure out some way somehow to be part of this sport. I didn’t know anybody. Didn’t have a clue how to get involved. I just loved racing. So I said What the hell, turned around and told him, “Come with me young fella” I knew the security guard, so we walked right down there to Bean. He was absolutely spent after that stupid Florence heat, but Butterbean and Nicole couldn’t have been any better or nicer to that young man regardless of the exhausting heat. He got his diecast car signed and got a memory that I hope sticks with that young fella for a long time. The older I get the more I realize racing has given me a helluva lot more than I ever dreamed it would. Twenty years ago I was the kid standing outside the fence in Braselton, GA just wishing somebody would let me in. Now I get to be the guy who opens the gate for somebody else. Damn proud to be a small part of this great sport we call short track racing.
