Whenever Americans try to impose their ridiculous "free speech" laws on Brazil, I have to explain this again: 1) Brazil does not follow the sloppy, outdated, US Constitution. It has it's own laws; 2) Unlike in the US, glorification of pedophilia is not protected free speech here+

3) Like other countries around the world, e.g. Germany, glorification of Naziism is also not protected as "free speech." In Brazil, the reason for this is the Constitution's concept of the Harmony of Rights. No essential right can be used to trample over other essential rights;

4) Within the Brazilian legal framework, "comedian" Leo Lins' jokes about fucking schoolchildren who play with dolls violate children's' right to enjoy a happy, stress free and normal childhood, as defined in the 1990 Statute of the Child and Adolescent. gov.br/mdh/pt-br/navegue-por…

5) There is not authoritarian repression of people protesting the genocide in Gaza in Brazil. Brazil's speech rights protect political protest but they don't protect Leo Lins if he glorifies Naziism, because this violates the rights of Brazil's majority non white population.

Bottom line: The Silicon Valley technofascists don't want their social media and e-commerce corporations to have to obey local laws. It's not about free speech. If it were, WAPO and Musk would be denouncing authoritarian repression of protests against US-backed genocide in Gaza

LIns' still has the right to multiple appeals, and has rich and powerful far right actors helping him. My guess is he'll end up with a few months house arrest, tops. For more on Silicon Valley's war on Brazil's speech laws, read this: fair.org/home/i-knew-they-ha…

Adolf Hitler based his public personna, or "character" on Charlie Chaplin's "Tramp" personna - notice the identical mustaches. Chaplin said this fact bothered him so much that he decided to make "The Great Dictator"

BS, law is pretty new 2023, even in 2018 the most authoritarian of the judges in Brasil declared a joke is a joke in a similar case. The new law is most authoritarian and can treat an "offense" even as a joke, to the equivalent of racism...

Yet, people with more than two neurons still find those jokes funny and perfectly understand that they are just that: jokes. Nobody is guilt for you lack of cognition.

ele não foi condenado por piadas mas por racismo, homofobia e outros crimes de ódio, alem da apologia ao estupro e pedofilia essa é a materialidade do crime, a forma como ele executou não importa tanto

There's a difference between censorship and being punished AFTER a crime. When Brazil was a dictatorship (backed by the US), the feds could censor BEFORE content was published, legal or not. Now one may say anything, but faces justice for things like slander, threat, racism, etc

A sociedade evoluiu.

This man makes disgusting jokes about murder, pedophilia, racism, and xenophobia. The issue is that the far-right treats this behavior as normal, as if joking about such cruel and degrading topics were acceptable.

We were taught Brazil's Constitution was 'inadequate' for being detailed, unlike the US's 'advanced' vague one. How convenient — time shows exactly who benefits from a Magna Carta light.
