Captain Smit Machchhar, speaking to PM
@narendramodi from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi, bandaged, tubes in his nose, days after his own co-pilot attacked him mid-flight on Flydubai FZ1073.
He described falling to the cockpit floor, badly injured, as the aircraft began a steep descent.
In that moment, he said, he kept reciting the Hanuman Chalisa.
"Whenever I am in pain, I recite the Hanuman Chalisa. At that time too, I only kept reciting the Hanuman Chalisa."
"Lord Hanuman gave me courage."
He realised that if he didn't get back up, every passenger on that plane could lose their life.
So he got up.
He opened the cockpit door.
He gave his crew and passengers the chance to end the danger.
174 people are alive because of that choice.
Modi spoke warmly of Smit's mother, Geeta Ben, telling him that though her name means Gita, she had clearly raised her son on the Bhagavad Gita's own values.
An 11-year pilot.
A father.
A man who, in the most violent moment of his life, found his strength in prayer, not panic.
This is Hindu faith, lived, not just spoken. ๐
