Chinese public is AI-optimist because state media are promoting optimism; the Chinese state needs to compete with America on AI.
American public is AI-pessimist because the left is promoting pessimism; they want more control over AI.
This is a national security risk created by a self-interested political faction.
There is no question that any frightening incident will be blown out of proportion by the American left to justify increased powers over AI; this is already happening.
The result may be no different from the way the Western left fearmongered about nuclear power, which crippled the West's energy infrastructure.
This is not a remote concern. It has already happened in the past, and it is happening again now.
The odds that the American left gains the upper hand on this issue eventually are high.
American AI accelerationists don't need to wait. They should methodically work to create a multi-layered apparatus that can neutralize this threat. There are many ideas, but the response needs to be proactive and create neutralization measures for every contingency and level of capture threat.
In pandemic management, there are pandemic simulations. But in principle, the inverse is also possible: overreach simulations, with different kinds of state or non-state actors responding to and neutralizing overreach.
Scenarios and models can be created for what overreach looks like and how to neutralize it at every level -- from media narratives to litigation and legislation, all the way down to complete regulatory capture. Such simulations and models have never been easier to generate.
I'm just an "influencer". But I know that I am read, so I'm going to put it out there.

Luddites said that about nuclear energy.
Medieval Luddites said that about gunpowder.
"Trust me AI will kill us in Two Weeksâ„¢. No I do not have any evidence of this. You just gotta trust me bro."
No, we're not going to just trust your word.
Luddites = losers
