I’ve been living in Milan for 6+ years and this is what nobody tells you: Milan is changing a lot. There’s a ridiculous amount of money coming into the city. People from all over Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. You can feel it when you walk around. Real estate has gone fucking crazy. Since Covid, prices have jumped massively. In the nice areas, new buildings can easily be €14/20k per sqm. And renting a nice 100–110 sqm apartment for €5/6k per month is not particularly shocking anymore. The funny thing is that Italian salaries obviously haven’t caught up with any of this. So Milan sometimes feels like a rich international city that accidentally ended up in Italy. Food is still one of the reasons I love it here. You can eat incredibly well without spending a fortune. But if you start going to the nice places, drinking good wine, ordering delivery, doing brunches etc., things get expensive very quickly. Milan can absolutely feel like London or Dubai on the bill. Milanese people are snob as fuck. Luckily there aren’t that many Milanese people left 😂 The city is ridiculously international now. You can get around with English pretty easily, especially if you’re in the center. But if you’re staying for years, learn Italian. It makes a huge difference. Also, choose your neighborhood carefully. I can’t stress this enough. Two apartments 10 minutes apart can give you completely different lives. And then there are Fashion Week and Design Week. They’re great. Unless you actually have to live your normal life during them. Then they’re fucking unbearable. Milan is also probably the most connected city in Italy. You have three airports, great trains and you’re basically a short flight from everywhere in Europe. Public transport is surprisingly good too. If you live in the right area, you don’t really need a car. The weather sucks more than people admit. Spring and autumn are beautiful. Summer is hot and humid. Winter is basically 3 months of grey skies and asking yourself why you live here. Crime is another thing. I don’t think Milan is particularly dangerous, but petty crime and the feeling of insecurity have definitely become more noticeable, especially around some stations and areas. And yes, the city could probably do a much better job dealing with it. But after 6+ years, here’s what I think: Milan is probably the best city in Italy if you’re ambitious. There’s money here and there’s business. There’s fashion, design, finance, startups, luxury and international people. People actually move here to build things. And I think that’s what makes Milan different from the rest of Italy. The downside is that the city is becoming increasingly expensive while still giving you Italian salaries, Italian bureaucracy and Italian taxes. You basically get the cost of London with the bureaucracy of Italy. But somehow… I still fucking love living here.
