PART 2
My wife told me that what happened next was what really shocked her.
After she stepped back from the examination, the patient became even more frustrated. He insisted that because he had come to the hospital, the examination should simply continue regardless of his refusal.
But my wife stood her ground.
She explained something many people don't understand: a patient has the right to refuse an examination, but a doctor also has the responsibility to stop when the examination cannot be performed safely and with proper consent.
She told him, “I’m not trying to disrespect you. I’m trying to respect your decision while also protecting your safety.”
That statement changed the atmosphere in the room.
Eventually, another doctor was called, and the patient was given the option of having a male doctor continue the consultation.
He agreed.
On her way home, my wife told me something that stayed with me:
“Medicine isn't just about knowing what to do. It's also about knowing when you shouldn't proceed.”
And honestly, that's a lesson more people need to understand.
Doctors deserve respect, but patients deserve dignity and the right to give or withhold consent too.
A medical examination should never become a battle of pride.
Trust, communication, consent and professionalism must come first. 🩺❤️
My wife, a female gynecologist, came home today and told me about a terrible encounter with a male patient. She needed to examine him, but he kept refusing her instructions, saying he wasn't comfortable with a woman touching him. She calmly explained that she was there as a medical professional and that he could request a male doctor if he preferred, but he continued arguing and wouldn't cooperate. Eventually, my wife had to stop the examination because without his cooperation, she couldn't safely proceed. 🧵
