Spot on post, Jeff!!! One of the worst things a scout can do is “assume.” Attention to detail is vitally important. The smallest details can have the biggest consequences when they’re overlooked.

As a coach I've always thought this. The problem is a coach has leverage. You don't perform you don't play. You don't meet the standards and expectations you get dismissed. Teachers have no leverage. Bring back real discipline and academics could soar.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 WHERE DO YOU GO? One of the hardest decisions an Area Scout makes isn’t deciding who to go see. It’s deciding who NOT to go see. Because every scouting trip costs you another look somewhere else. Imagine it’s April. You’ve already seen Player A four times. You know the body. You’ve watched BP and defense. You’ve timed him down the line. You’ve seen him against velocity and breaking stuff. You’ve talked to his coaches, built history and have a pretty good idea where he fits on your preference list. He’s playing 75 miles away tonight. Player B is 250 miles in the opposite direction. You’ve seen him once. He was 91 to 94 that night. Now you hear he just touched 96. Where do you go? This was a huge part of managing a territory that people outside scouting rarely saw. For 20 years, I covered enormous geographic areas. Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Las Vegas and at different times Wyoming, southern Idaho and El Paso. There were always more players than there were nights, so another look had to have a purpose. ANOTHER LOOK SHOULD ANSWER A QUESTION. Can the hitter handle velocity? Can he recognize spin? Was that 96 real or a one-night spike? Is the velocity holding? Can the shortstop really stay at short? Was the bad performance an outlier? Has the body changed? Is the player getting better? Those questions determine where the car goes next. Scouting isn’t collecting as many looks as possible. It’s collecting the right information. There comes a point when another look at Player A may simply confirm what you already know. Meanwhile, one look at Player B could completely change his evaluation. So I’m probably driving the 250 miles. That doesn’t mean I like Player B more, and it definitely doesn’t mean I’ve stopped liking Player A. It means Player B has more unanswered questions. That’s an important distinction, especially for players and parents. Sometimes a scout comes to three or four games and suddenly disappears. The natural reaction is, “He must not like me anymore.” Not necessarily. I may already have enough history to write the player. He may already be on my draft list. I may have recommended him to my Crosschecker or Scouting Director. Another set of eyes may be coming next. Or I may simply have 30 other players scattered across thousands of miles who still need answers. An Area Scout has one resource he can never replace: time. Every night you spend at one ballpark means another player isn’t being seen. Every extra day in Phoenix may mean missing a pitcher in Albuquerque. Every trip to Denver may cost you a look in Salt Lake City. And sometimes you make the wrong choice. You drive five hours to see the pitcher who touched 96 and he doesn’t pitch. A rotation changes. Weather cancels the game. The player you’re following gets scratched. Meanwhile, the player you decided not to see hits two home runs. Welcome to scouting. That’s why managing a draft list is an evaluation skill in itself. You have to know what you already know, what you still need to know and which look has the greatest chance of changing your evaluation. There were players I needed to see ten times. There were others where four quality looks told me more than ten random ones ever could. The number wasn’t the point. The information was. A scout’s job isn’t simply knowing which players to follow. It’s knowing why you’re following them. So before I started the car, I wanted to answer one question: What am I going there to learn? If I couldn’t answer that, there was probably another player somewhere in my territory who needed that look more. Every trip needs a purpose. Every follow needs a question. Every additional look should provide information capable of changing the evaluation. The best scouts don’t just know who to follow. They learn when they have enough information to move on. #BehindTheRadarGun 🔎
