Here’s a theory: Growing up, the narrative for a lot of black kids was “if you’re too dark you’re ugly.” And if you’re light-skinned, you must be “mixed with something”, because being 100% black is out of the question, especially if there is beauty on your skin. This is also something that was seen in times of slavery and we were separated because of that. Field slaves & house slaves. This was color coded as well.
