11/ The UN updated its FAQ on 24 September in response to our questions. It says declarations were assessed for “possible or actual conflicts” and measures including stepping aside from specific discussions were agreed. But it does not name who agreed to do so.

5/ LawZero donor Jaan Tallinn led Anthropic’s $124 million first funding round and invested in its second. He also co-founded the Future of Life Institute, another LawZero funder. Backers of AI developers are also financing organisations warning of AI’s dangers.

4/ Open Philanthropy gave OpenAI $30 million. Co-founder Holden Karnofsky says the deal included a board seat and participation in early decisions. Karnofsky is also married to Anthropic president Daniela Amodei.

3/ Co-chair Yoshua Bengio was named as an OpenAI advisor at its launch in 2015. He now leads LawZero, backed by Coefficient Giving, formerly Open Philanthropy, and Jaan Tallinn. Both have helped finance the companies the panel assesses.

2/ Backers of OpenAI and Anthropic also fund the organisations employing the panel’s co-chair and a writer of its July report. These are people shaping assessments intended to guide AI policy worldwide. The financial overlap goes to the heart of independence.
