On Friday I was a guest host up in Sacramento, 6-10 am, on Sactown Sports 1140. Naturally we rolled into some college football talk. With the transfer portal and NIL front and center right now, here’s how that topic went.

If it’s not too much trouble, perhaps Pope Leo XIV could send a follow-up note to the Sox before today’s game. 😊 #WhiteSox
Earlier today, a letter from Pope Leo XIV arrived at Rate Field. Go White Sox!

Bears beat the Eagles 27-7. Happy for Case Keenum. Good dude, tough. A survivor in this league. Played so well tonight. White Sox…. you’re on the clock.

My guy @mopatton_sports points out it’ll be Tuesday, 2:00 pm CT on YouTube, Facebook, etc. I’ll post the link should you want to watch/listen. We drill into Saturday’s loss, Josh Heupel and coachspeak, what would Pat Summitt say, Faizon Brandon, Auburn and a little MLB.
I’m jumping on the Sports on Main Street podcast today with Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame member and good friend @mopatton_sports. Not sure yet when it airs but we’ll talk Texas-Tennessee, the upcoming Auburn game in Neyland and maybe a little MLB postseason.

The weekly breakdown from @colecubelic. Frustrating to read from a Vols fan perspective but fair and detailed to a fault.

TENNESSEE: Tough one. OL disappointing. Lost a few in slide pro. Lost some 1 on 1's. Left side struggled. Got beat on a twist. Just some simple breakdowns. Needed a bit more push in run game but numbers were being added late. LBs up to LOS & safeties down into the box. Ball needed to get out. Middle of the field was there on multiple occasions. Missed a few layups. Couldn't connect on shots. Can't have TE on 1 in pass pro. A few more intermediate answers may have helped. Threw into pressure early. Inserts were not consistent in run game. Had some MA's up front in run game as well. Def played hard. 2 dominated, dented pocket, penetrated vs run. He really got after it. LBs didn't fit duo well enough. DC did a great job of forcing OL to be wasted. 5 got good push. Safeties solid in run support. 18 & 33 had good reps off the edge. Couple bad angles on back end. Took ball away. 9 played backside of run well. 5 tough inside. Thought they were disruptive enough up front. Didn't overdo it with pressure. We're going to lose a jump ball or two. Affected QB but lost rush integrity at times. 7 played pullers well. Played well enough on that side.

One thought continues to roll through my head: We can be critical of any number of things in today’s game (namely the entire offense and some of the coaching decisions to go with it) and yet - the Vols were still one drive, one throw, away from a win. Think about that. That’s not remotely some sort of hollow moral victory. But, today showed me why Jim Knowles was brought here.

Everybody in the stadium knew a blitz was coming by Muschamp. He's been doing that since I played! 6’4 WRs everywhere for UT. That's all I’m going to say!🤔GoVols!🍊

Final Texas 20 Tennessee 17 Total yards Texas 262 Tennessee 221 Well, one comment on the last possession. We recover an onside kick, great field position and it felt like it was all set up for the Vols to grab a stunning win. At least OT. Instead —— chaos and confusion.

So this is interesting… I did not have recovering an onside kick and a chance to win the game on my Vols scorecard. Wow.

End 3rd Texas 13 Tennessee 10 Total yards Texas 206 Tennessee 134 Vols right there but haven’t been able to hit the big play. Another big third down coming for this D.

The story of this game so far has been a lot more than Faizon Brandon struggling against their D. How about Jim Knowles and the Vols D shutting down the Texas rushing attack. It’s 13–10 and Tennessee is absolutely in this game!

Vols D holds. FG, Texas. Texas 13-10, 9:00 in the 3rd. Overall, Vols seem like they have more juice than they did in the 1st half. Now would be an ideal time to take the lead. It’s just a thought.
