ALT NC checking out the stage in preparation for tomorrow!
ALT A key message on the CIPD stand - the profession is us, together. Your CIPD, relentlessly useful to you in meeting the performance challenges you face
This seems a strange way to describe someone who fought at the Somme, who lost nearly all his closest friends in battle, who drank the nectar of ancient poetry with C. S. Lewis, who wholly & irrevocably re-invented the fantasy genre.
Love a conference…
Delighted to join colleagues from HR in Scottish Local Govt at the SPDS conference. Spoke about the role of the profession, stepping up to influence the future of local govt, & our renewed commitment to members through @cipd Scotland. Fantastic Qs & feedback!
A few folk asked me why I wanted to hare to London after @CIPD ACE today. To see this - I am not sure Tim knows the impact he has had. I lost count of the number of leaders in recruitment who told me how much they have learned from Tim or being inspired by him.
This evening’s special award is for Lifetime Achievement and goes to Tim Cook, Group CEO of nGAGE Talent! Sending huge congratulations to you on this amazing accomplishment #RECAwards26
What a two days! 4,000 people professionals together in Manchester, focussing on the difference our profession can make in rapidly changing times. We know @cipd has to rise to meet the moment - and your feedback on how we do that has been fabulous! To work!
Fascinating reseach by @resfoundation on the changing world of work (resolutionfoundation.org/pub…).
Big drop in willingness of managers and professionals to "put in the extra mile".
This could have serious consequences for productivity - and change conclusions in my recent paper on managerial ambition (bit.ly/4atmsvu).

Interestingly, Bletchley Park in World War Two followed exactly this approach. They didn't hire people for a role. They hired interesting people and allowed them to find out what they were good at.
i’m going to say something brave.
talent pipelines should die. not every career needs a feeder school, feeder job, etc. people should be able to try things, learn on the job, and change direction as they grow.
we’ve optimized the serendipity out of professional life.
This is data that businesses have been pointing to for years - lower return to workers for skill building leaves some questioning whether to put the effort in. Govt's lack of a proper workforce approach has allowed us to drift to a place that sustains lower productivity growth.
I find it odd that the idea of paying young people a lower minimum wage is being called "discriminatory".
Stagnating productivity, coupled with a high minimum wage, has already given Britain one of the flattest career ladders in the rich world

Andrew’s work in support of the Governance of @RECmembers was tireless - especially in the restructuring of governance we did during the pandemic. A huge support to me and three difference @RECPress Chairs.
A big thank you to Andrew Harvey as he steps down after six years as Chair of the REC’s Remuneration and Appointments Committee.
His dedication and expertise have helped shape our Board and committees. His leadership will be much missed!
Really good tonight. Should have won, and unlucky not to. Need to take our chances because, like the other lot, they will get all the leniency in the world from officials.
Here's our response to today's #Budget2026 for the people profession in the UK - better words around employers, but more practical action needed.
