15 minutes isn't a lot of time to explain months of severe weather research. Topics include probability of severe hazards & operational implications; forecasting tornado conditional intensity at @NWSSPC; progress toward WoFSv2; & inflow environments of derechos. #AMSMadisonSummit
Passive radar receivers deployed in the OKC metro can help us retrieve 2D and 3D wind fields from nearby storms. Recent work addresses automatic quality control of receiver data, enabling real-time wind retrievals. #AMSMadisonSummit
Looking beyond lightning flash-based conceptual models of operational lightning data can provide useful insights into the intensity and evolution of deep convection. #32SLS#AMSMadisonSummit
Find your dream career at CIWRO! Your severe weather research, through collaboration with our supportive weather community, could be world-changing. For more information and to apply: ou.edu/ciwro/careers
CIWRO posters have been lining the #AMSMadisonSummit exhibit hall this week. Topics include PAR analysis of downburst & mesovortex precursors in MCSs; relationship between NGFS fire properties & WoFS environment conditions; and high-res historical data of severe hail in the U.S.
Cloud regime transition in a cold air outbreak case during CAPE-k was successfully reproduced by DP-SCREAM. Primary results indicate that simulated liquid water path in roll regime is sensitive to horizontal grid spacing. #AMSMadisonSummit
Using object-based verification on SFE26 cases, we found WoFS & WoFSCast produce more realistic storm structures. NowcastNet matches their hour-1 location accuracy but quickly degrades later, suffering from noisy composite reflectivity. #AMSMadisonSummit
Preliminary analysis of high-res UAS-derived terrain data with radar observations of the 26 Feb. '23 Norman, OK tornado suggests changes in surface rugosity may precede changes in tornado heading, motivating further research into surface effects on tornadoes. #AMSMadisonSummit
The RRFS model predicts fewer but larger, isolated, and more intense storms. Current MPAS-based models better match the strongest storms but tend to produce small, less intense storms. These known characteristics can help develop future weather models. #AMSMadisonSummit
NWS forecasters tested five new satellite products this spring in NOAA's Hazardous Weather Testbed. They demonstrated new lightning datasets, improved imagery and cloud top winds, and simulated satellite data to prepare for future satellite missions. #AMSMadisonSummit
In situ observations of a long-lived snowband sampled during the IMPACTS project on 23 January 2023 reveal that particle properties vary within updrafts, among storm regions (including the snowband), and with height below cloud top. #AMSMadisonSummit
Scientists are developing a next-generation Warn-on-Forecast system to improve 0- to 6-hour guidance for tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, lightning, and flash floods. NOAA testbed evaluations will help determine how well it performs. #AMSMadisonSummit
Supercell thunderstorms in the SE differ significantly from those in other parts of the U.S. High-res simulations allow researchers to better understand the how and why these storms differ and whether their tornadoes form from different processes. #AMSMadisonSummit
