I have lived near a major Mississippi tributary, the Arkansas River, for 26 yrs. Cargo barge traffic stopped 21 yrs ago when Hurricane Katrina closed the Port of NOLA & it's been a slow climb back. Just in the last month there's been far more barges than anytime since Katrina
Sitting down to breakfast at the most hole-in-the-wall, greasy spoon 24/7 diner in my city (Benson's Grill in Fort Smith, AR) . Ordered a fried egg, bacon, cheeseburger w/ hash browns w/ shredded cheese & onions + coffee, of course. Perfect start to a lazy late morning
12 minutes, and out, for a driver's license renewal at my local DMV here in Arkansas (known quaintly, here, as the "Revenue Office"). Will always compare to waiting over 3 hours in 1999 at the DMV in lower Manhattan 🙂
So JD Vance says he's a diet mountain dew sort of guy? I can do one step better -- from the break room fridge ($0.50 paid on the honor system) for cold afternoon caffeine, just grabbed a can of the Wal Mart knockoff version of diet mountain dew 🫤
Heatwave has broken in western Arkansas. There were storms in mid morning (power went out briefly in the office) and now rain is over and it's 72 degrees outside. Hope the cold front stays
Just voted in the Republican primary for the first time in 20 years. The local establishment Republican congressman is fending off a MAGA challenger (deep red district) and just felt appropriate to vote for Haley against Trump
Just took a taxi back to my hotel in Panama City, Panama and, looking at other vehicles on the street, learned that Dodge Ram is another US car maker (like Chevy) that has a compact sized pickup for the Latin American market, which apparently can't be sold in the US 🤷
We're on the fourth day of the current Israel/Palestine flare-up and, finally, someone I know here in western Arkansas/eastern Oklahoma posted on their Facebook about how we're seeing Biblical prophecies about The Last Days fulfilled. Took longer than usual 🙄
I've been living on the Arkansas/Oklahoma line for 22 years and I know that I have finally shed my East Coast origins (Washington DC suburbs, by way of Charlotte & NYC) today, as I just went and a minor bit of impromptu auto repair with duct tape and a pocket knife
Been thinking a lot lately how the poignant divide isn’t between left and right or even locals and cosmopolitans, but between people who live in constant, feverish, religious anticipation of some new and better (ideal) world and those who feel like this imperfect one works.
While the past two days have seen some of the highest reports for vaccine distribution in a while, our hospitalizations and new cases continue to rise. Delays in getting vaccinated allow the Delta Variant to spread. Let’s get the first shot before the weekend of the 4th starts.
Don't become so radicalized that you interpret every call for equality and fairness as "pandering to the woke mob".
Don't become so radicalized that you interpret every critique of critical race theory as an act of racism.
Open your mind. Open your heart. Think for yourself.
I'm sick and tired of the people making excuses for extremists indulging their puerile longing for political violence, whatever their motivations or rationalizations.
We need a humanistic politics that treats people as human first and attempts to understand what basic needs are being unfilled that motivate people toward certain policies and candidates, and that treats people as more than the sum of their political beliefs.
