This morning our state tragically lost another public servant while he was working to make our highways better and safer for all of us. My deepest condolences go out to Elvin Hernandez’s family. May God bless them and all of the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way every day to serve Connecticut.

I’ve been watching with concern the way AI has been influencing healthcare over the past year, and I’m not going to let it determine the care of the 270,000 people on the plan I run. Yesterday I announced we are putting the following safeguards in place to protect for our members, and next year I’ll work with the legislature to put them in place for all health plans in CT. ✅ No AI-only denials. A human always reviews​ ✅ No AI-only claim downcoding​ ✅ Plan data won't train outside AI models​ ✅ Members will be told when AI is used​ ✅ Carriers must prove their AI is accurate & fair

Before this gets dumb on the internet, let me give context: We verified the accuracy of every reprocessed claim but the auditors don’t like the way we did it. This is an inside baseball dispute between accountants, nothing more. Every dollar is accounted for. Nothing is missing.

Early this morning a person with a knife attempted to attack one of our Connecticut State Capitol Police officers while he was on duty in his vehicle. Fortunately the officer was not injured and the person was quickly taken into custody. Today and always, I’m truly grateful to the men and women of the State Capitol police (and all Connecticut law enforcement) for their service and the risk they take every time they put on the uniform in order to keep our communities safe.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal and my friends in Connecticut’s Nepalese-American community impacted by the devastating flood.

There are other safeguards, but this is important and it’s ridiculous that we suggested they do this *two years ago* and they still haven’t done it.

I promised myself I'd visit every city and town in Connecticut during my term, and our final stop was a town hall meeting in Lyme.   I got the questions I expected (like on health care and the budget) and ones I didn't (like on road salt), but it was a great way to end the journey.   And I'm grateful to everyone who joined us in Lyme and along the way. Your feedback – the real, honest stuff you only get when you're out talking to people instead of sitting in Hartford – has made me better at this job, and I'm really grateful for that.

I love Connecticut, and I've lived here my whole life. But when I got elected Comptroller and began serving the whole state, I realized there was so much I still had to learn about the people and places of this small but diverse state. So, I made myself a promise: I'd visit and talk to folks in all 169 cities and towns before the end of my term. Here's what I learned along the way.

I made a promise to myself that I’d visit all 169 cities and towns during my term. Last but not least was Lyme (population 2,352), and I invited the community to bring their questions and join me we for a town hall meeting at their historic Public Hall. It was an awesome way to wrap up our tour. I’ll share more next week on what I’ve learned along the way. But for now, I just want to say thank you to everyone in every community who I’ve met these last three and a half years. Truly grateful.

True story: I decided to pursue a career in public service because of a high school book report on the Kennedy brothers.  I talked about my journey with a room full of young Connecticut leaders at Boys and Girls State and urged them to stick with serving others. Bonus was getting to meet Daniella from East Lyme and Ned from Ridgefield who were both elected to be State Comptroller.

Wage theft is a real issue and a real problem on job sites.    If a contractor getting state funding to build something shorts their workers, a new law I introduced allows our office to stop those payments until the workers get paid what they deserve.

Healthcare costs are out of control, premium increases are through the roof, and cities and towns are having a really hard time finding quality, affordable insurance coverage for employees. Amid this chaos, the Partnership Plan remains the most stable, comprehensive option for municipalities. Our increased enrollment affirms this, and we are eager to welcome new and returning groups as the Partnership Plan continues to grow.

When I was a kid, my mom couldn’t afford to send me to summer camp. Last week, Mayor Arulampalam and I welcomed hundreds of Hartford kids to @CampCourant. This place has been operating for more than 130 years because it's built on a simple idea: every child deserves a safe place to learn, play, and just be a kid during the summer.   No kid should be priced out of that experience.

Happy Birthday, America! Let us never stop working to perfect this experiment and defend the ideals that this great country was founded upon 250 years ago today.

After receiving an anonymous whistleblower complaint, my office recently launched an investigation into their handling of their employee retirement accounts. That will continue. And I hope other state agencies will continue or launch investigations into this school to ensure students and workers were properly treated and, if not, that those responsible can be held accountable.

110 ordinary citizens from all walks of life and from all over Connecticut were just randomly chosen (via the CT Lottery!) to be part of our upcoming Citizens Assembly. So excited to get to work with them on fixing our broken property tax system!

Kinda random, but maybe Hawai’i and Connecticut isn’t like comparing apples to pineapples. Last week, Hawai’i became the second state after Rhode Island to join our growing retirement savings alliance. More states joining = lower investment fees for CT savers and more people across the US who have access to a secure retirement after a lifetime of hard work. Total win win.
