My hot take is that I think trans women are biologically male, but in many cases can socially become women and thereby are de facto women, even if they aren’t actually women. It’s easier for all involved if they are just treated as women in (most) circumstances.

The sports that have blanket banned trans women their policies are based on the flawed assumption that transgender women retain inherent physical advantages and would therefore dominate women’s competitions. The research and over 50 years of trans women competing in elite female sports does not support this idea. Research has found that transgender women have; 1- similar relative lean mass with cisgender women. 2-no significant differences in upper-body strength, 3 no significant differences in lower-body strength, 4- no significant differences in maximum oxygen consumption, a standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. There have been 12 Olympics that have allowed trans women to compete in the female category if they meet the hormonal and physical requirements of the trans sports policy. The results over 12 Olympic games suggests trans women massively underperform in elite womens sports. Since the IOC has created a rule for trans athletes to compete in 2003, over 81,000 people have become Olympians. Out of those 81,000 Olympians a total of 2 have been trans women & one came dead last the other came 37th out of 42. There isn’t a single trans or intersex woman dominating her sport. Even Caster Semenya, the most famous, & most successful, intersex woman athlete doesn’t “dominate” her sport. Caster has won a total of two Olympic golds medals & holds no world records.  By contrast, Katie Ledecky has won a total of 9 Olympic gold medals and has broken 19 world records since 2013. Why is Katie Ledecky treated like a marvel, and Caster Semenya and transgender women are treated like mutants? There currently exists no evidence to suggest that trans women who elect to suppress testosterone (through, for example, gender affirming hormone therapy and/or surgical gonad removal) maintain disproportionate advantages over cisgender women indefinitely. More specifically, current evidence suggests any physical performance advantages  trans women do not fall outside the range observed among XX women after 2 years of testosterone suppression. In summary There is very low participation of trans people in sport due to a large number of barriers such as actual or anticipated discrimination. Hormone therapy leads to substantial physical changes in trans women, which often narrow or eliminate many performance differences over time. Any remaining differences are small and vary by sport. Some studies show a slight residual advantage in certain measures (e.g., handgrip strength) and a disadvantage in others (e.g., lung function and aerobic fitness). How much this matters depends on the demands of the specific sport. Safety concerns are mostly hypothetical. To date, there is no solid evidence that trans women pose a greater injury risk to cis women in sport. New study finds no clear physical advantage for transgender women over cisgender women in sports. A major review challenges the claim that transgender women hold a clear physical edge in women’s sports. After pooling results from 52 studies and thousands of participants, researchers in Brazil reported that transgender women had greater lean mass than cisgender women, but not greater physical capacity. Across the data they examined, they found no meaningful differences in upper-body strength, lower-body strength, or aerobic fitness between the two groups after hormone therapy. That does not settle the political fight. It does, however, narrow the scientific one. The paper, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, reviewed research on body composition and physical fitness in transgender people receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy. In their analysis, they covered 6,099 individuals overall. This included 2,566 transgender women, 2,646 transgender men, 442 cisgender women and 445 cisgender men. Forty-two studies were included in the meta-analysis. Transgender women, the central result was striking in its contrast. Lean mass remained higher than in cisgender women, yet the performance measures most often cited in sports arguments did not show an advantage. “This refutes the logic behind blanket bans on transgender women in sports,” said Bruno Gualano, a physician and researcher at the University of São Paulo in Brazil who co-authored the study. “Most of these policies are based on the assumption that transgender women retain inherent physical advantages and would therefore dominate women’s competitions. The data does not support this idea.” The review found that transgender women had higher absolute lean mass than cisgender women, but similar relative lean mass.
