There's a substantial disconnect between the way elected officials see businesses in their communities and how industries evaluate their own business realities. For example, recent policy fights for grocers have focused on restricting their use of technology — whether it's self-checkout or data-driven marketing and promotions.
From today's @GroceryDive: "To draw customers into their stores and build lasting relationships with them, grocers need to be able to invest in price reductions, remodeling campaigns, wages and other priorities. But how do you take on extra costs when you have less money coming in?"
Traditional grocers are fighting tooth and nail to compete and grow to serve more Californians, but also navigating declining sales in many cases. If we want to expand food access and affordability, elected officials should work to partner with their local grocers instead of limiting their ability to compete and keep their doors open.

When a grocery store is forced to close its doors at one location, there can be a myopic focus on getting another grocer through those doors. The truth is grocers can't stand in place. The old gym or mass retailer that closed its doors in the same neighborhood might now be the best option for a grocer to serve a community, like in the example below. This is why policy approaches that nearsightedly only seek to swap a grocer for a grocer do not ultimately improve food access.
