Jot this date in your journal of impossible moments. I'm going to congratulate & thank Gov. Newsom for vetoing a fiscally irresponsible bill, AB 1383. Yes, let's value our law enforcement personnel, but not at the expense of service insolvency in every city & county in the state.

I don't normally say positive things about Governor Newsom, but I give him high marks for vetoing AB 1383, the pension busting bill passed by legislative Democrats and Republicans alike. I hope a future Governor Becerra can also stand up to public safety unions in this way.

The San Bernardino County Superior Court yesterday granted in part and denied in part Chino Valley Unified’s parental notification policy. We disagree with the court’s reading of Mirabelli. SCOTUS put California on notice that its schools cannot keep parents in the dark. We’ll announce next steps after we review the court’s written ruling. Ironically, this is about the same amount teachers pay in dues to their union every year.

The clout that allowed firefighters to increase their already sufficient pension benefits could have been used to demand the state legislature bring back the timber industry, which has been regulated into oblivion. That might reduce the number of super-fires that plague the state, saving billions of dollars and putting fewer firefighters in harm’s way. Police officers in California could have used their clout to demand the state legislature start enforcing Proposition 36, which made crime illegal again. If police in California were allowed to do their jobs, recruitment and retention would not be a problem. Neither of these priorities, which one would think are central to the identity of firefighters and police, mattered enough to come in front of give us bigger pensions. California is a broken state, and the public servants who have become the public masters have it in their power to fix it.
