OSPR concluded response efforts in Trapper Slough in San Joaquin County this week. A multi-vehicle accident sent a tanker carrying asphalt into the waterway earlier this month. In total, cleanup crews removed over 500 bags of asphalt from the slough. No oiled wildlife observed.

OSPR remains part of a multi-agency task force to address illegally moored and disabled vessels in the Oakland Estuary. These abandoned and deteriorating vessels pose threats to navigation, public safety, and the environment.

More than 50 vessels have been removed from the Oakland Estuary so far this year with the help of the Surrendered and Abandoned Vessel Exchange (SAVE) Grant, a funded vessel removal project.

OSPR and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a grounded vessel near Point Conception in Santa Barbara County this week. A contractor was hired and successfully removed all fuel from the boat.  Local agencies are working on a salvage plan. No oiled wildlife observed.

OSPR crew responded to a traffic accident on Highway 20 in Colusa County Friday, which resulted in approximately 120 gallons of diesel discharged into 2047 Canal, near the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge.

Heavy vegetation in the canal limited the spread of the fuel. Containment measures were put in place, and a contractor was hired for cleanup and recovery. Our field response team will continue to monitor the situation. No oiled wildlife observed.

OSPR crew responded to a multi-vehicle accident in San Joaquin County on Sunday.  As a result, one of the tanker trucks involved entered Trapper Slough. The tanker was carrying asphalt, and some of that product entered the waterway.

Containment measures are in place, and a contractor has been hired to conduct cleanup. No observed oiled wildlife at this time, but out of an abundance of caution the Oiled Wildlife Care Network has been put on standby.

OSPR Crew responded to a semi-truck accident near Floriston in Nevada County on Friday. Two of the truck’s saddle tanks ruptured in the crash, discharging approximately 100 gallons of diesel over the side of the bridge.

Upon investigation, it was determined no product made it into the Truckee River. Responders were able to clean up the impacted area. No oiled wildlife observed.

OSPR has concluded response efforts within a tributary of Carbonera Creek in Santa Cruz County. OSPR’s Central Field Response team has been overseeing cleanup of diesel in the tributary from an unknown source. Crews determined Thursday that cleanup endpoints have been met.

OSPR was part of a Unified Command responding to a grounded fishing vessel in Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. Responders worked Friday night and through the weekend to remove all diesel and hydraulic oil from the vessel.

OSPR crew responded to a sinking fishing vessel in Estero Bay in San Luis Obispo County. The U.S. Coast Guard was able to refloat the vessel and tow it to Morro Bay Marina. The crew confirmed no oiled wildlife observed.

OSPR continues to oversee a cleanup of diesel from an unknown source in a tributary of Carbonera Creek in Santa Cruz County. Cleanup of the initial impacted storm drain has been completed, but crews continue to clean and collect product in the tributary.

OSPR Law Enforcement took part in a National Night Out event at Harkness Elementary in Sacramento County this week. Community members and students got a chance to check out one of OSPR’s patrol vessels throughout the evening.
