⚠️ On Friday, Sept. 18, 2026, shortly before 3 p.m., officers stopped a truck travelling 103 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on northbound Aero Drive N.E. The driver was approaching the crest of a hill where visibility was limited, creating an increased risk for everyone on the road. The driver is scheduled to appear in court on charges of speeding & careless driving & was also issued a $421 ticket for driving without a valid licence. ‼️ Road safety is a shared responsibility. 🔵 ONGOING INVESTIGATION 🔵 Our Traffic Section continues to investigate a collision in the S.W. community of Cedarbrae that left 1 person with life-threatening injuries. 📍 At approx. 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, we responded to reports of a parked vehicle rolling backward in the 0-100 block of Cedardale Hill S.W. It is believed the vehicle struck the victim, knocking them to the ground. The victim was transported to hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries. A second victim attempted to enter the moving vehicle to stop it but was knocked down in the process. The second victim suffered minor injuries & was taken to hospital as a precaution. It is too early to confirm the factors that contributed to the collision. All possible contributing factors are still under investigation. 🔎 NEED TO IDENTIFY 🔍 We are asking for the public’s help to identify 2 individuals believed to be responsible for a commercial robbery & assault that occurred in the S.W. 📍 On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at approx. 9:28 a.m. it is believed that a man & woman entered a business located at 500 17 Avenue S.W. & requested water. After being advised that payment was required, the woman became disruptive, throwing coffee cups from the counter onto the floor & taking a banana without paying. As the employee was attempting to escort the 2 individuals from the business, the female suspect is believed to have assaulted the employee before fleeing with the male suspect. 🔎 The female suspect is described as between 12 to 18 years old, with medium, dark hair. The Calgary Police Service recently completed its three-day fall commercial vehicle inspection in high-volume traffic areas around Calgary. The checks were conducted from Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, in partnership with Sheriff Highway Patrol (SHP), Alberta Transportation Vehicle Safety & Economic Corridors, Airdrie Bylaw & The City of Calgary. In that time, a total of 197 vehicles were inspected, with the following results: 🔴 100 vehicles were found to have critical defects that placed them out of service. (51 per cent) 🟠 36 vehicles were found to have major defects that required attention. (18 per cent) 🟢 61 vehicles passed with no critical defects. (31 per cent) A total of 98 violation tickets were issued. Additionally, 1 driver was charged for operating a commercial vehicle without a valid license. 🔧 Among the most common defects to be found were worn tires, poorly secured cargo & inadequate brakes. Additionally, defective headlights, faulty steering systems & leaking fuel tanks were also found. “Commercial vehicle drivers perform a critical service for Calgarians, transporting important goods we all rely on,” said Insp. Robert Patterson, with the Calgary Police Traffic Unit. “However, it’s critical that those vehicles meet all legal standards to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.” 📈 The percentage of vehicles placed out of service during this inspection (51 per cent) was slightly higher than during the inspection event that took place in the spring (48 per cent). 🐕 Some dogs chase balls. Ours train to search confined spaces, navigate obstacles & access hard-to-reach places. Today, Calgary Police Service & @CANTF2 (Canada Task Force 2) officially unveiled a new canine training structure designed to help our teams build & maintain the skills needed to search safely & effectively in a variety of environments. The multi-purpose structure supports training in obedience, agility, confined space searching & elevated access and egress, while creating more opportunities for joint training between our canine teams & emergency response partners. As students settle back into the school year, our traffic teams are continuing to monitor traffic across Calgary, especially during drop-off & pick-up times. 🔵 CHARGES LAID 🔵 2 men have been charged after a hate-motivated assault in July. 📍 On Thursday, July 2, 2026, police were called for reports of a woman in medical distress outside of a restaurant in the 9600 block of Macleod Trail S.W. Witnesses reported that the woman had been using a portable washroom when 2 men walked up to the washroom & tipped it over with the door toward the pavement, leaving the woman trapped inside. The men then fled. The witnesses assisted the woman out of the washroom, called police & rendered first aid on the scene. The victim was transported to hospital for exposure to waste matter & toxic chemicals. She has since recovered. Following an investigation by our Hate Crime Prevention Team, which included reviewing CCTV & speaking with witnesses & the victim, it is believed the men made comments targeting the victim based on gender & ethnicity, & hate-motivation has been deemed a factor in the assault. As a result, 2 men were arrested in connection with the incident. 📌 Tyson David CANN, 24, of Calgary, was charged with 1 count of assault causing bodily harm & will next appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. 📌 Fynn Storm FERRIER, 24, of Kimberley B.C., was charged with 1 count of assault causing bodily harm & will next appear in court on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026. Any evidence of hate motivation is considered by the courts after a person is found guilty of the connected crime. If the judge decides during sentencing that hate was a motivation for the offence, it is an aggravating factor that can add to the convicted person’s sentence. Hate-motivated crimes are recognizable crimes, like assault, theft, vandalism or any other crime, where the offender was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate that is based on 1 of 9 personal characteristics of the victim. 🔎 NEED TO IDENTIFY 🔍 We are asking the public for assistance in identifying 2 people believed to be responsible for the theft of paramedic tools & equipment. 📍 On Friday, Sept. 18, shortly before 6 a.m., someone accessed the personal vehicle of a Public Safety Unit paramedic, which was parked in the 100 block of Covebrook Place, N.E. The suspect took a bag that contained paramedic equipment & uniforms. We do not believe the paramedic’s vehicle was targeted, as some of the gear was found discarded nearby & 2 people were recorded on CCTV attempting to open several other vehicles around the same time. 🔍 The first suspect was wearing a black motocross-type helmet & was carrying a blue cooler & large bag. 🔍 The second suspect was wearing a hooded sweater under a two-tone jacket with reflective strips on the wrists & shoulders. Today, we remember fallen member Constable Rob Vanderwiel, who tragically lost his life during a traffic stop in the early hours of Sept. 22, 1992. As he returned to his vehicle to verify the driver’s identity, he was shot & sadly, he died at the scene. The perpetrator was later apprehended, charged & convicted of first-degree murder. To honour his memory & recognize the ultimate sacrifice, an internal service of remembrance will be held today. The life of a police officer can be ended at a moment’s notice. Their loss shall be forever remembered.
