The #DomeFire in Yosemite National Park looks more active today with the return of warm and dry weather. Temperatures will see a slight drop off with increased humidity around Monday, but until then I have my eyes on some potential for weak downslope offshore winds over the next two nights.

The #DomeFire in Yosemite National Park is very active again this afternoon, with a robust plume and an intense satellite heat signature. The recent perimeter shows that the fire has spotted north up to the southern edge of the Empire Fire scar from 2017. The fire is 1,177 acres with no containment.

The #FloristonFire in Nevada County is looking better than it was a few hours ago, with a weaker heat signature on satellite. Things can always change for the worst, but the fire looks less threatening at the moment. We'll have to wait and see if this trend continues.

We are now tracking the #FloristonFire in Nevada County, close to the Truckee River and border of Nevada. The fire is currently 298 acres, driven by down canyon winds.

This is the #DomeFire in Yosemite National Park, which started yesterday morning.
The fire was most recently reported as 100 acres at 4 pm yesterday, though it has been growing and intensifying since. It’s been active in a drainage north of Chilnualna Falls above Wawona, with two burn scars from 2017 to the north and east. The conditions this fire is burning in are far from extreme, but it is clearly enough to maintain a fire.

The fire is currently 5 acres and burning slowly in medium brush mid-slope along the I-405 SB.
Currently the fire is burning in 104ºF heat with 34% RH.

At this time 6 years ago, we witnessed what is in our opinion one of the most prolific wildfire growth periods in recent memory.
As if the 2020 fire season couldn’t get any worse, an unusually strong weather system swung down through the Intermountain West, generating intense downslope offshore winds from Washington to Mexico. New, active, and dormant wildfires all started ripping in a whole new direction at the same time, sending so much smoke into air that it turned the sky red for tens of millions of people.
For some it was much worse than just bad air quality, as entire communities were devastated and lives were lost. In California, the North Complex Fire destroyed thousands of structures and killed 16 people in Butte County. Other fires like the Creek Fire and August Complex Fire went on their own massive runs, contributing to the thick blanket of smoke that would shroud the West Coast in the days to follow.
It's hard to articulate just how insane this was, it kind of felt like the world was ending for a bit. #CAwx
