BREAKING: Liberals vote down protection for the mentally ill, open door to ‘advance request’ euthanasia for dementia – Press Release
OTTAWA, October 7, 2026 — The Liberal Government today defeated Conservative-sponsored Bill C-218, which would have stopped the expansion of euthanasia (MAiD) to Canadians whose sole underlying condition is mental illness. The vote was 187-141.
Hours before the vote, Liberal Justice Minister Sean Fraser told media that the Liberal government intends to table its own legislation this fall to indefinitely exclude people whose sole condition is a mental illness from euthanasia.
But, in an alarming move for concerned Canadians, the government said its legislation will also expand euthanasia by decriminalizing advance requests, a long-sought goal of the euthanasia lobby. If passed, people diagnosed with a serious illness, such as dementia, who may lose the capacity to consent, will be permitted to request to be killed by euthanasia in the future, and will not have to provide consent before it happens.
“The Liberal government is playing with lives,” said Jeff Gunnarson, National President of Campaign Life Coalition (CLC). “It plans to vote down a bill that would protect the mentally ill while claiming it will introduce its own protections. And on the same day, it says that it plans to make euthanasia more available for those suffering with dementia. The Liberal government is still bent on expanding death—it just changed its target.”
Pro-life advocates have warned that euthanasia by advance request is a defining mark along the slippery slope that leads to euthanasia on-demand.
Matthew Wojciechowski, CLC’s Vice President, said a bill like the one Minister Fraser outlined today would be unsupportable.
"The Liberals, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, failed to do the right thing, again. Now they are planning to expand euthanasia through advance requests. This raises serious questions about who is really driving this euthanasia regime. Canadians deserve a government focused on upholding human dignity at all its stages, not one steered by a death lobby of euthanasia activists.”
Campaign Life Coalition thanks MP Tamara Jansen for introducing and championing Bill C-218 and for her steadfast commitment to protecting vulnerable Canadians.
