Errol Flynn was an Australian-born actor who became Hollywood's definitive golden-age swashbuckler before descending into a life of notorious hedonism. He defined the adventure genre in classic films like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), The Sea Hawk (1940), and They Died with Their Boots On (1941). By the late 1940s and 1950s, heavy drinking, drug use, and failing health eroded his career. He chronicled his chaotic life in his candid autobiography, My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1959).
By the spring of 1959, Errol Flynn was 49 years old, one of Hollywood’s most notorious leading men, and nearing the end of a life defined by fame, excess and scandal. The teenage girl photographed beside him was Beverly Aadland.
She was 16.
Aadland had been a child performer and dancer before entering Hollywood, appearing uncredited in films including South Pacific. She met Flynn while working on the 1959 film Cuban Rebel Girls. Flynn was more than three decades older, married to actress Patrice Wymore, and already infamous for his relationships with very young women.
Their relationship quickly became public.
On May 5, 1959, photographers captured Flynn and Aadland together at the Lido nightclub near Piccadilly in London. In photographs from the period, they can resemble another glamorous celebrity couple. But Aadland was still a teenager.
They traveled together, appeared publicly together and eventually went to Vancouver, Canada, where Flynn was negotiating the sale of his yacht, the Zaca. On October 14, 1959, Flynn suddenly collapsed and died of a heart attack. Aadland was reportedly with him during his final trip.
She was 17 years old.
Flynn was accused of statutory rape by two teenage girls. Although a jury acquitted him, the ensuing media circus exposed a dissolute lifestyle and birthed the famous American slang phrase "in like Flynn".
The story became even more disturbing afterward. Aadland’s mother, Florence, published a sensational account of her daughter’s relationship with Flynn, exposing intimate details to the public and turning Beverly’s adolescence into tabloid material. Beverly later disputed parts of her mother’s version and described a childhood in which Florence had pushed her relentlessly toward Hollywood.
For decades, the photographs of Flynn and Aadland were often presented as evidence of the aging movie star’s legendary appetite for women.
Look at them now and they tell a different story.
A 49-year-old married Hollywood star was openly photographed with a 16-year-old girl, and much of the world treated the scandal as another colorful chapter in the legend of Errol Flynn.
