Manufacturing Consent and Deferring Liberation under Colonial Domination: A Global Theory of Propaganda & the Subjugation of Scotland by the English State
I have been looking into propaganda techniques & theoretical frameworks across centuries & cultures/geographies for a while now. None appears more meticulously refined, more insidiously embedded in institutional life, than the complex architecture of propaganda deployed by the English state to handle/manage, defer, ultimately obscure & prevent Scotland’s liberation. The violence of this strategy cannot be confined to historical memory. It remains active, manifesting materially, epistemologically in the present. Through coercion, seduction, simulation, lies and control over symbolic production, the English coloniser does not simply govern. The regime scripts the field of perception itself. Consent becomes manufactured through layered mechanisms, where representation replaces presence, performance displaces substance, "aestheticisation" of history substitutes for political truth. Scotland, in this process, becomes a managed, passive object, not an agent.
This colonial matrix (cf. my post on Scotland as England's foundational colonial model:
x.com/thomsonchris/status/19… ) cannot be understood through legalistic framings or policy diagnostics alone. Propaganda, as classically defined and more recently theorised (for propaganda notions/history cf. e.g. Marlin; Taylor; Stanley), must be recognised not as an accessory to power but as its condition of possibility. Every mediated discourse that purports to explain Scotland’s position within the fake 'United Kingdom' does so from within a matrix constructed by the English colonial power. The rituals of English parliamentarianism, the pageantry of English monarchy, the language of (English) unionism, the appeals to English procedural democracy operate as mechanisms of symbolic domination (cf. Bourdieu). In such a regime, discourse serves to conceal not to reveal, defer & domesticate not deliberate & emancipate.
The rigged, manipulated referendum of 2014, illegal under any international/UN law franchise, must be located within this architecture of control (cf.
x.com/thomsonchris/status/19…). The event did not constitute a democratic rupture but a carefully bounded simulation of sovereignty (cf. Baudrillard's hyperreality & simulation/simulacra). Political subjectivity was permitted only in tightly regulated form, pre-emptively circumscribed by threats of economic collapse, diplomatic isolation & exclusion, & military uncertainty. All lies. The performance of popular participation obscured the fact that the parameters of the decision had already been defined by the English colonial power. No referendum that leaves sovereignty contingent upon permission from the very state accused of denying that sovereignty can ever be regarded as authentic. A fake, colonial referendum.
The rhetoric of “once-in-a-generation” was never merely descriptive. This phrase functioned as a propagandistic technique of exhaustion. By temporally isolating the event, investing it with finality, the colonial state engineered a psychological & political paralysis. Sovereignty was transfigured into an act of episodic consent, rather than a continuous right rooted in historical title & self-recognition. Such framing belongs to the arsenal of colonial temporality, in which the dominated/colonised are always asked to wait, to prove readiness, to mature into the rights that have been systematically denied. Textbook colonialism. Scotland is a colony of England.
