Capcom is set to transform their iconic RE Engine (Reach for the Moon) into an AI-powered one🚀
“Our goal is to a future where we can create together with AI”
The project is called REX, and it is set to address current issues with game development.
✅REX engine is set to become the world’s most common programming language
✅Equal parts easier for humans to use and for AI to understand.
✅Capcom will use AI to speed up and streamline some development processes to make them easier, rather than generating assets and hard en mass
Programmer Satoshi Ishida gave insights on these issues being faced in development:
✅Games are now so massive that simple processes have become extremely time-consuming
✅Increased numbers of staff requires an easy to use engine for everyone
✅Integrating AI into development workflows is now an essential condition for streamlining future development
REX Engine is meant to improve game development, performance, tools, quality assurance and more
Integrating AI is better than building a brand new engine Capcom felt that, rather than creating a brand new engine from scratch, and they’ll gradually implement those improvements over time to evolve RE Engine to next gen.
✅In March, Capcom stated that they won’t create AI generated assets, but also added that they plan to use it as a contributing technology to improve efficiency and productivity.
✅They are exploring ways to implement it in various areas, including graphics, sound and programming.
This is quite an interesting approach, because instead of using AI to generate models and art, it is being use to make tedious and time-consuming processes finished with ease.

Hideo Kojima recently spoke of this matter, stating that he doesn’t see AI as a replacement of human creativity, but rather a “friend” or helper tool.
In a time when games take 5-7 years if not more to be made, and budgets ballooning to hundreds of millions of games that very much play the same as they did 20-30 years ago, measures must be taken to cut that time and cost by a significant margin, without compromising human creativity, uniqueness and artistic integrity😎
