The Renoir heist reopens a dark chapter in French history The two artworks stolen last week had previously made their way into the hands of Nazis during wartime, and illuminate one of the catastrophes of 20th-century Europe ✍️ @CatherineOstler bit.ly/4rag4jN

Last November I went to the bucolic Renoir museum, once his house, at Cagnes-sur-Mer and was struck by the uncertain provenance of so many of the pictures, including the two that have been stolen, as I have written for @ObserverUK below 👇

Yesterday's heist at the Auguste Renoir museum in Cagnes, in the South of France, was not the first time paintings like « Jeune femme au puits » (1886) have been stolen. Nazi looting agency Otto whipped it away to Bavaria during the Second World War. Finally repatriated in 1949.

« Coco lisant » - a 1905 portrait of Auguste Renoir's four-year-old son reading - is the most famous of three paintings confirmed as stolen from the impressionist's eponymous museum in Cagnes-sur-mer, France, in a dawn heist today. Conservative estimate of loss: £10million.

This is so terrible. Such a beautiful museum, so low-key, so much heritage and culture built on trust. And that portrait of a beloved youngest child

It is not a “special landmark”. It is a place of worship. It is sacred to people. Please respect that.
Fabric. St Paul’s Cathedral. Name a more iconic duo. Bringing together these two institutions will create a one-of-a-kind experience, pairing world-class music with one of our most special landmarks. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy8z…

There’s something absurd but also very funny about reviewers giving the Bayeux Tapestry marks out of 5. Waiting for a: ⭐️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ “Faded cloth, hard to understand, poor lighting, long queues”

Incredible photo from the City of Bike in 1948, when Parisians would get back from their month-long August holiday on the Riviera, and their Dick Van Dykes would be waiting for them at the Gare de Lyon. Didn't even bother with a lock and chain.
