Beer throwing seems a national sport at times. Ball, net, beer, air. It would be unwise of clubs to allow their stadia’s stands on match-days to be used for this new national sport. Unless you have a designated drinking/beer-throwing section - hard in packed PL grounds - it is hard to see how drinking alcohol in the stands will be universally welcomed. Issues of faith. Issues of not wanting to be showered in beer. Utter soak nonsense.
Issues of VAR complicating timing of these lager launches. Issues of drinkers bearing trays returning to their seats, distracting everyone in their row from the game. Excuse me, excuse me. Spillage.
Issues of a few minutes later the return run with an empty tray and full bladder. There are enough interruptions in the game anyway. And stewards are often busy enough without dealing with the occasional over-imbiber.
English football has changed and the trouble on the terraces has largely disappeared. The concern over the return of drinking in the stands is less the consumption but the projection. The PM is right to consider ways of helping clubs wanting to maximise revenue - and alcohol sales is one way. But the complications are considerable. It’s a hangover English football doesn’t need.
And ending the ban could impact local pubs - many of which have been under threat. British Beer and Pub Association claims that almost two a day are going out of business (161 in first quarter of 2026 inc 2,600 jobs).
Football has bigger issues than debating repealing the booze ban.

An England fan on a group WhatsApp with 200 home-and-away members reports that most of those polled are against the PM’s idea of a trial allowing fans to be able to drink alcohol in the stands. “Most don’t want that Boxpark culture of beers being thrown in the air when there is a goal, those few idiots throwing up, or having people shuffle past them every min to go get their pint and come back. The reasons for the ban in the first place (the terrace culture of decades ago) may have gone, but that doesn’t mean that lifting it will all go smoothly.”

Diabolical. Think of me: match-going fan stuck in a w/chair & at full time exiting the stadium surrounded by mostly men pushing and shoving. Imagine crowd angry cos game lost or bad decision & they’ve been drinking for at least 2hrs - still think it’s a good idea, @andyburnham ?
