The first Cybercab built with Tesla’s own cathode material from the new Giga Texas plant is a bigger deal than it first appears.
Cathode is the most expensive and performance-defining part of a lithium-ion cell, and large-scale production of it has long been concentrated outside North America.
By making this material in-house at the first sizable cathode facility in the Americas, Tesla shortens its supply chain, lowers cost, and gains tighter control over the 4680 cells meant to power high-volume Cybercab production.
It is another concrete step in the vertical-integration strategy Tesla laid out years ago, moving the company closer to producing the full battery stack on U.S. soil as robotaxi output begins to scale.

Anduril just took first place in XPRIZE’s Autonomous Wildfire Response track.
Its Lattice software links ground Sentry towers, airborne sensors, and Ghost-X drones into one loop: detect a fire, confirm it isn’t a decoy, fly the nearest aircraft, and drop retardant - aiming to finish the job within 10 minutes across ~1,000 km².
The system was tested on live fires in Alaska and also won a $1M bonus for detection accuracy.
The idea is simple: treat an ignition like a time-critical target, and let software coordinate the response before the fire gets big.
